- Promote and lead safety management culture across all civil engineering activities — taking visible personal ownership of safety, adhering rigorously to station safety procedures, and setting the standard for contractors and colleagues
- Ensure that quality procedures are implemented and maintained across all civil projects and maintenance activities on site
Civil/structural inspection programme
- Manage and deliver the programme of civil and structural inspections as specified in the station civil engineering maintenance manual — covering all major infrastructure elements on site
- Drainage system inspection, testing, and upgrade works — maintaining the integrity of underground drainage systems and oil/water interceptors in full compliance with EPA IE Licence requirements. EPA compliance is a statutory obligation and a key performance area for this role.
- Bund testing and upgrade programme — inspection, integrity testing, and upgrade of bunded containment structures across the station, ensuring compliance with environmental licence conditions
- Roof maintenance, louvre services, and repairs — assessing condition, specifying remedial works, and supervising contractor delivery
- Jetty inspection and cathodic protection system maintenance — the 380m Shannon Estuary jetty is a critical asset in a harsh marine environment. The civil engineer is responsible for the inspection regime and the maintenance and upgrade of the cathodic protection system protecting the structural steelwork from corrosion.
- Chimney inspection and maintenance — coordinating specialist inspection activities and managing any required structural interventions
- Ash Handling Facility inspection — structural and civil inspection of the ash handling infrastructure
- Troubleshoot as-found civil and structural defects arising from inspection or operational requests — develop practical, cost-effective solutions that support continued safe station operation
Civil rehabilitation and corrosion protection
- Plan and manage the rehabilitation and refurbishment of structural steelwork elements across the station — working in a harsh marine/estuarine environment where corrosion rates are elevated and protection system performance is critical to structural longevity
- Manage the maintenance and upgrade of corrosion protection systems — cathodic protection, protective coatings, and anode replacement — across both the jetty and onshore steel structures, including specification, contractor procurement, and supervision of application and testing
Project management and contracting
- Implement contracting strategies and manage the procurement and execution of contracts for maintenance and construction activities — from specification and tender through award, site supervision, and close-out
- Specify and manage sub-contractor and sub-consultant inputs for site investigation, feasibility studies, assessment, design, consenting, and construction — including geotechnical investigation, structural design, and specialist marine works where required
- Manage and co-ordinate, across ESB Generation and ESB Engineering and Major Projects (EMP), all civil, structural, and environmental engineering activities required to deliver projects to approved scope, budget, and programme
- Manage projects through ESB's contractor management process — ensuring contractor compliance with HSE, quality, and programme requirements throughout delivery
Green Atlantic Project support
- Act as the civil engineering liaison for new infrastructure projects interfacing with the station — specifically in the context of the Green Atlantic Project (Green Energy Hub at Moneypoint). This includes providing existing infrastructure details, assessing interface requirements for new developments, and advising on civil constraints that affect the green energy programme
- Build and manage relationships with internal ESB stakeholders (Generation, EMP) and external stakeholders (contractors, consultants, regulators) across both the maintenance programme and the Green Atlantic development
Requirements
- Minimum 5 years' relevant civil/structural engineering experience — with a demonstrated track record of delivering civil and structural engineering packages from design through construction to completion
- Onsite construction experience — the role is site-based and requires regular direct supervision of contractors and inspection of works in progress. Office-only engineering experience is insufficient.
- Strong technical capability in civil and structural engineering — able to assess structural condition, specify remedial works, review engineering designs from external consultants, and troubleshoot as-found defects independently
- Strong commercial and project management capability — experience managing civil engineering contracts including procurement, progress monitoring, variation management, and commercial close-out
- Demonstrated capability in identifying, communicating, and managing project-critical technical risks — including structural and environmental risks in an operating industrial facility
- Full driving licence and access to own vehicle — Moneypoint is a remote rural site with no public transport; personal mobility is essential
- Experience managing multi-disciplinary projects — coordinating civil, mechanical, structural, and environmental workstreams simultaneously
- Experience performing the PSDP (Project Supervisor for the Design Process) role under Irish Safety in Construction regulations, and working familiarity with the PSCS (Project Supervisor for the Construction Stage) duties — these are statutory roles under the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (Construction) Regulations 2013
- Experience with corrosion protection systems in marine or industrial environments — cathodic protection, protective coatings, or marine structural inspection
- Experience with drainage systems, bunded containment structures, and environmental licence compliance (EPA IE Licence or equivalent)
- Experience with contractual frameworks for construction — NEC, FIDIC, or Irish public sector procurement
Qualifications
- Level 8 Civil Engineering Degree or equivalent — mandatory
- Level 9 (Master's) Engineering Degree — desirable
- Chartered status with a recognised professional engineering institution (Engineers Ireland, ICE, or equivalent) — desirable
Compliance and safety
- Legal permission to work in the Republic of Ireland — mandatory
- Full EU/EEA driving licence, valid to drive unaccompanied in Ireland — mandatory
- Valid SafePass (Irish HSA Safety Awareness card) — mandatory for all ESB site contractors
- Manual Handling training — up to date
- PPE at contractor's own cost: steel toe boots (S3 EN ISO 20345), gloves, eye protection. Hard hat and ear defenders provided by ESB on site.
