The Automation Engineer will collaborate with Manufacturing, Engineering, Quality, and external partners to deliver compliant automation solutions, drive continuous improvement, and support product introductions and equipment upgrades.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in automation, mechanical, electrical, or mechatronics.
  • 3–5 years in medical device or regulated manufacturing.
  • Experience delivering automation projects.
  • Knowledge of FDA/ISO/GMP quality systems.

Position Overview

The Automation Engineer is responsible for supporting the design, implementation, maintenance, and continuous improvement of manufacturing automation systems within a regulated medical device environment. This role supports automation projects associated with new product introductions, equipment upgrades, process optimization, and operational excellence initiatives while ensuring compliance with applicable quality and regulatory requirements.

Working closely with Manufacturing, Engineering, Quality, Maintenance, and external partners, the Automation Engineer delivers reliable and compliant automation solutions that support business objectives, equipment performance, and continuous improvement initiatives.

Tasks & Responsibilities
  • Install, maintain, troubleshoot, and optimize automation equipment, control systems, and supporting infrastructure.
  • Support the planning, design, execution, documentation, and delivery of automation projects.
  • Conduct assessments of automation systems to ensure compliance with quality, safety, and regulatory requirements.
  • Analyze technical and project scope changes and assess impacts to timelines, resources, costs, and operational performance.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders, subject matter experts, and external suppliers to define requirements and achieve project deliverables.
  • Support commissioning, qualification, validation, and implementation activities for automation systems and equipment.
  • Provide technical guidance and coaching to junior engineers and other team members.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives focused on reliability, efficiency, and productivity of manufacturing operations.
Qualifications & Experience
  • Bachelor's Degree in Automation Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
  • Minimum 3-5 years of experience within the medical device, pharmaceutical, life sciences, or other regulated manufacturing industries.
  • Proven experience supporting and delivering automation projects.
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and technical documentation.
  • Working knowledge of FDA, ISO, GMP, or equivalent quality systems within a regulated environment.
  • Experience with PLC programming and manufacturing automation systems preferred.
  • Experience supporting commissioning, qualification, and validation activities is advantageous.
  • Strong analytical, project management, communication, and continuous improvement skills.
Additional Information

Johnson & Johnson announced plans to separate our Orthopaedics business to establish a standalone orthopaedics company, operating as DePuy Synthes. The process of the planned separation is anticipated to be completed within 18 to 24 months, subject to legal requirements, including consultation with works councils and other employee representative bodies, as may be required, regulatory approvals and other customary conditions and approvals.

The anticipated base pay range for this position is:

€52,400.00 - €82,915.00
