Cheeverstown House in Ireland seeks a Part-time Staff Nurse to deliver safe medication management training and clinical support across residential and day services within the south Dublin area.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Deliver training to nursing and non-nursing personnel on responsible and safe medication management.
• Deliver training programmes to meet Cheeverstown requirements and national direction on Safe Medication Administration.
• Ensure clinical assessment and competency review of trainees.
• Ensure documentation for medication administration is in place.
• Carry out medication audits and promote learning from errors.
• Understand and apply open disclosure principles.
• Ensure compliance with HIQA regulations relevant to safe medication administration.
• Coordinate safe medication practice across services and liaise with community pharmacists.
• Participate in policy development and representation at forums.
• Maintain wider clinical competencies and provide direct support when needed.

Cheeverstown is a voluntary organisation regulated by the Health Information & Quality Authority (HIQA). We provide a wide range of person-centred services, including residential, respite, and day services, supporting almost 400 adults with an intellectual disability across the south Dublin and Kildare area.

The nurse liaises and works closely with:

• Individuals supported by Cheeverstown services and their families
• The pharmacist & Safe Medication Management Lead
• Managers linked service areas (e.g. Residential services, Day Supports, Respite services, Quality Manager, Risk Manager).
• Staff teams
• The Multi-Disciplinary support team.
• Community partners - local pharmacists, local primary care network, acute hospitals
• External partners such as NMPDU, National Federation of Voluntary Service Providers

Key Responsibilities

• To deliver training to nursing and non-nursing personnel on Responsible and Safe Medication Management, ensuring compliance with National guidance and best practice
• To deliver training programmes to meet Cheeverstown requirements and National direction on Safe Medication Administration in Disability Services
• To ensure clinical assessment and competency review of trainees
• To ensure documentation is in place for medication administration by staff or self-administration by individuals, having regard to consent and will & preference of individuals
• To carry out medication audit: to promote a culture of reporting of medication errors and learning; to grade and analyse medication errors
• To understand and apply the principles of open disclosure as it relates to errors & risk
• To have an understanding of HIQA regulations as relevant to safe medication administration in residential services
• To ensure a smooth transition to a local community pharmacy for our decongregating individuals and liaise with community pharmacists to ensure a safe transition with adequate (in partnership with pharmacist)
• To guide on safe medication practice in respite services
• To partake in policy development and policy implementation
• To represent Cheeverstown services at forums
• To maintain wider clinical competencies (e.g. epilepsy, enteral feeding, Suprapubic Catheter management) and undertake and deliver training as required
• To provide direct support to people using services and staff teams if required

Expectations of the Post Holder:

• Will maintain professional nurse registration with NMBI
• Will maintain certification in relevant training to enable course delivery
• Will keep abreast of developments relating to safe medication practices within disability services
• Will report to relevant personnel any unusual incidents that you observe relating to safe practice with medication.
• Will exhibit flexibility in relation to operating times and holiday periods to meet the needs of service users.
• Will attend training as required by the organisation, and also will seek to continuously develop professionally through education, training, networking, updates and other sources as are available.
• Will demonstrate flexibility with regard to supporting across service locations responding to service needs

Hours:

Part-time, 18.75 hours per week.

Salary:

In line with the HSE Staff Nurse pay scale, calculated on a pro-rata basis and commensurate with qualifications and experience.
