Job summary

University College Dublin invites applications for a temporary post of a Research Data/ML Engineer in the ConnectedPolitics Lab, RINN AI UCD. You will lead retrieval, evaluation and ML research to enhance EURVISTA platform accuracy and trust.

The role focuses on retrieval optimisation, language-model evaluation, and data pipeline maintenance. You will work with senior developers to prototype statistical models and ensure robust ingestion from EU sources, delivering results within project

Qualifications

• Primary degree in computer science, data science, machine learning, statistics or related field or equivalent experience.
• Demonstrated research or applied NLP and large language models experience.
• Experience with retrieval-augmented generation, embeddings and vector search.
• Strong Python programming skills.
• Experience designing and running evaluations of model or system performance with defined accuracy targets.
• Experience building and operating data pipelines (ETL/ELT), including web scraping or API ingestion.
• Experience with relational databases (e.g. PostgreSQL) and search/vector stores (OpenSearch/Elasticsearch).
• Familiarity with ML frameworks such as PyTorch, Hugging Face or LangChain.
• Understanding of operational requirements for a successful research project.
• Excellent communication and organisational skills, including meeting deadlines.

Responsibilities

• Lead retrieval architecture design and optimisation for EURVISTA platform.
• Evaluate embedding models and benchmark query-response accuracy.
• Calibrate confidence scoring and mitigate hallucinations.
• Prototype and validate statistical/predictive models on legislative datasets.
• Operate and extend daily automated data ingestion across European Parliament, Council of the EU and EC sources.
• Collaborate with researchers and developers without budgetary responsibility.
