Job summary

Maynooth University invites applications for a Professor in the School of Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultures (SMLLC). The appointee will have an outstanding record in research, scholarship and publication, teaching and educational innovation, and academic leadership in one of the five subject areas represented in the SMLLC.

The successful candidate will contribute to the teaching and research activities and to the management and coordination of the SMLLC, with significant leadership

  • Lead teaching and research programs in the SMLLC.
  • Provide academic leadership and coordination across the School, Faculty and University.
  • Manage teams and contribute to strategic planning and development of new programmes.
  • Contribute to curriculum design and the supervision of postgraduate researchers.

Job description

Maynooth University seeks an outstanding academic to join our staff as Professor in the School of Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultures (SMLLC). The person appointed will have an excellent record in research, scholarship and publication, in teaching and educational innovation, and in academic leadership in one of the five subject areas represented in the SMLLC (Chinese Studies; French and Francophone Studies; German Studies; Spanish and Latin American Studies; and Applied Linguistics and TESOL). They will be expected to make a strong contribution to the teaching and research programmes of the university, as well as to the management and coordination of the SMLLC.

Professors will be expected to provide significant intellectual leadership, through a demonstrated commitment to both education and research, and also to contribute to the effective leadership and management of the School, the Faculty and the University.

Essential
  • A PhD in one of the five subject areas represented in the SMLLC, i.e. Chinese Studies; French and Francophone Studies; German Studies; Spanish and Latin American Studies; or Applied Linguistics and TESOL.
  • An outstanding record of research and scholarship, reflected in an excellent and impactful publication profile in one of the five subject areas of the SMLLC (Chinese Studies; French and Francophone Studies; German Studies; Spanish and Latin American Studies; and Applied Linguistics and TESOL) and a compelling plan for future publications and research activities, demonstrating the ability to sustain and deepen their research contribution over time;
  • An outstanding academic record as a university teacher and an educational innovator;
  • A proven capacity to offer strong academic leadership within the school and across the University;
  • Demonstrated management and administrative skills, including successful experience of managing teams;
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills;
  • The ability to build effective relationships with a wide variety of internal and external colleagues.
Desirable
  • A significant record of securing peer-reviewed national or international funding as Principal Investigator (or as a co-investigator in very large national and international collaborations), from prestigious and/or competitive funding sources.
  • Demonstrated experience of curriculum design and successful development of new programmes;
  • A strong record of successful supervision of postgraduate students and/or mentorship of postdoctoral researchers;
  • Prior experience as Head of School or a role with a comparable level of responsibility.
