Job summary

University of Galway invites applications for a full-time funded PhD scholarship affiliated with ICHEC and the School of Computer Science. You will work on climate data, downscaling with regional models, and contribute to impactful research across Ireland, Northern Ireland and Great Britain.

The role offers a tax-exempt stipend of €25,000 per year, fully covered university fees, and supervised research with Dr. Paul Nolan and co-supervision at the School of Computer Science.

Qualifications

• Strong MSc/MA from a high-ranking university in computer science, physics, mathematics, environmental/climate science, or related fields.
• Ambitious, creative, and motivated to lead climate solutions using computational and interdisciplinary approaches.
• Experience with complex problem solving projects requiring high computational resources (Programming, ML, large-scale data processing).

Responsibilities

• Develop and provide large climate datasets and derived products (e.g., evapotranspiration and soil moisture deficits).
• Evaluate and apply bias-correction techniques for regional climate projections.
• Use regional climate models (WRF, ICON, MPAS-RCM) to dynamically downscale data and run high-resolution simulations.
