A healthcare staffing agency is seeking a Staff Grade Perfusionist Scientist for a permanent role in Galway. The candidate will provide clinical perfusion services during cardiac surgery, manage complex cases, and participate in research and protocol development. Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Deliver specialist perfusion support during cardiopulmonary bypass.
  • Set up, prime and run bypass equipment, monitor physiological parameters.
  • Manage own caseload, maintain infection control, uphold confidentiality.
  • Participate in 24/7 on-call rota.

Job description
Perfusionist Scientist

Medforce are happy to be working with a well know Galway Hospital for the hiring of a Staff Grade Perfusionist Scientist. The Perfusionist Scientist will provide specialist clinical perfusion services for routine and emergency cardiac surgery, operating autonomously within hospital settings. Participate in research, development, and departmental protocols. This is a permanent position.

Responsibilities of Perfusionist Scientist
  • Deliver specialist perfusion support during cardiopulmonary bypass.
  • Set up, prime and run bypass equipment; monitor and adjust physiological parameters.
  • Perform blood gas analysis, manage coagulation, administer relevant drugs/fluids.
  • Use advanced techniques (ECMO, VADs, DHCA, cerebral perfusion).
  • Maintain perfusion equipment and ensure quality control.
  • Participate in 24/7 on-call rota.
  • Liaise with surgical, anaesthetic and nursing teams.
  • Manage own caseload, maintain infection control, and uphold confidentiality.
  • Provide input on service delivery.
  • Teach perfusion-related topics to staff and students.
  • Deliver presentations and engage in continuing professional development.
  • Support protocol development and clinical audits.
  • Evaluate equipment, contribute to research and innovation.
  • Work autonomously within guidelines.
  • Demonstrate effective communication, decision‑making, and risk management.
Requirements of Perfusionist Scientist
  • Accredited by/registered with the College of Clinical Perfusion Scientists of Great Britain & Ireland (or equivalent).
  • Specialist knowledge of perfusion techniques (e.g., ECMO, IABP, VAD).
  • Ability to interpret complex clinical data and make autonomous decisions.
  • Strong IT, communication, organisational and teamwork skills.
