Job summary

The Naval Service is recruiting for Direct Entry Operations Branch Officers in Cork, Ireland. This leadership role focuses on the overall running and operational readiness of a Naval Service vessel, from navigation to command, ensuring safety and mission execution.

Eligible candidates hold a Deck Officer CoC (Class 1/2/3) with watchkeeping, meet physical/medical/security standards, and must comply with Irish work permit rules. This is a permanent, full-time role with potential career progression.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Progression to Commanding Officer status may occur with experience and rank advancement.
• Support leadership development and ongoing training within the Operations Branch.

The Naval Service is the State's principal seagoing agency with a general responsibility to meet contingent and actual maritime defence requirements.

We are now recruiting qualified candidates to join as Direct Entry Operations Branch Officers. In this leadership role, you’ll play a central part in ship operations, safety and mission execution — from navigation to command. If you're ready for a career with purpose, challenge and variety.

About the Role:

• As an Operations Branch Officer, you are responsible for the overall running and operational readiness of a Naval Service vessel.
• Duties include Bridge Watchkeeping, overseeing safe navigation, monitoring maritime traffic and ensuring the safety of the ship and crew.
• You will lead boarding teams during fishery protection, anti-smuggling and drug interdiction operations, playing a key leadership role in maritime enforcement.
• Over time, Operations Officers may progress to Commanding Officer status, responsible for leading a ship and its crew on domestic and international missions.
• This role offers continuous opportunities for leadership development, advanced training and progression in rank and responsibility.

Eligibility Requirements:

• Educational/Professional Qualifications:
• Department of Transport Certificate of Competency (Deck Officer) Class 1, 2, or 3 with watchkeeping experience
• Or a recognised Naval Watchkeeping Certificate
• Or a qualification deemed equivalent by the Minister for Defence
• Applicants must be under 50 years of age on 31 December in the year of application: you will be required to provide proof of your age if you progress to the next stage of the competition.
• You must be at least 5ft 2in (157.48cm) in height. You will be measured during the selection process.
• No tattoos are to be visible above the collar while serving in the Defence Forces. This will be checked during the selection process and you may not proceed if you have visible tattoos above your collar.
• Applicants must meet the work permit eligibility criteria to serve as part of the Defence Forces. i.e. You must have a minimum of 5 years eligibility to stay in Ireland. You will be requested to provide proof of working permit on your application.
• You must meet medical, physical and security clearance standards, which will be assessed during the recruitment process.
