About the role

The Microbiology Medical Scientist will play a critical role in supporting the daily operations of BD's microbiology laboratory, ensuring a safe, compliant, and efficient working environment. This hands‑on, lab‑based position involves maintaining laboratory safety standards, preparing microbial cultures and reagents, performing microbiological tests, and supporting non‑scientific staff in handling live organisms. The scientist is also responsible for operating and maintaining lab equipment, managing inventory and supplies, conducting routine safety checks, and maintaining detailed records to uphold GLP and biosafety protocols. Collaboration with EHS, Facilities, and cross‑functional teams is essential to ensure consistent adherence to health, safety, and quality standards.

Main responsibilities will include:
  • Supporting the safe and efficient operation of BD's microbiology laboratory and ensuring adherence to all requisite health, safety, and quality standards at all times.
  • Writing, maintaining and enforcing procedures relating to all areas of the microbiology laboratory and its related testing equipment.
  • Assisting in training a team of non‑scientific staff and facilitating arrangements to introduce professional visitors to the laboratory.
  • Operating and maintaining laboratory equipment and performing microbiological testing to aid the non‑scientific associates.
  • Supporting and contributing to effective execution of audit activities.
  • Assisting in identifying and implementing operational procedures up to best‑practice standard to optimise use of resources.
  • Co‑operating with the relevant staff in developing and leading the introduction of new ideas and technologies.
  • Maintaining inventory logs, monitoring and restocking lab supplies.
  • Ensuring adherence to all codes of and guidelines relating to professional practice, including the maintenance of Quality Assurance standards.
  • Conducting routine safety checks and walkthroughs to adhere to biosafety regulations.
About you

Qualifications:

  • Registered on the Medical Scientists Register maintained by the Medical Scientists Registration Board at CORU.
  • Possess the fellowship or be eligible for fellowship of the Academy of Medical Laboratory Science (FAMLS) or equivalent.
  • Possess membership or be eligible for membership of the Academy of Medical Laboratory Science (MAMLS) or equivalent.

Experience:

  • Experience in a hospital laboratory microbiology setting.
  • 2+ years of satisfactory post‑qualification experience.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to present information in a clear and concise manner.
  • Demonstrated effective team and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent planning and organising skills.
  • Up‑to‑date knowledge of best practice in delivering a quality laboratory service and awareness of the requirements of ISO 15189.
  • Up‑to‑date knowledge of antimicrobial susceptibility testing guidelines.
  • Familiarity with laboratory information systems.

Role Compensation: € per annum as per Part‑Time Hours
