Job description

Red Chair Recruitment are presently recruiting for HV Electricians for ongoing works on the National Network. Working in various locations in Ireland, you will work on maintenance, testing, and repair of high voltage transmission lines and associated equipment. This includes overhead lines, substations, and underground cabling networks. The goal is to ensure safe, reliable electricity transmission across the grid. This is a permanent position with bases in Kerry, Dublin and Limerick.

Typical Responsibilities:

  • Installation & Commissioning: Install and commission high voltage equipment such as transformers, switchgear, circuit breakers, and protection relays in substations or along transmission lines.
  • Maintenance & Repairs: Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on HV lines, substations, and associated infrastructure to ensure optimal operation.
  • Fault Finding & Troubleshooting: Quickly locate and repair faults in high voltage systems to minimize downtime in the transmission network.
  • Testing & Inspection: Conduct insulation tests, earth continuity tests, and other HV electrical tests using specialized equipment.
  • Safety & Compliance: Follow strict HV safety protocols, including live line work procedures where applicable, and comply with ESB / EirGrid / HSE regulations.
  • Documentation: Maintain detailed records of maintenance, inspections, and repairs for regulatory compliance and operational efficiency.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with engineers, line managers, and other electricians on project installations, upgrades, or emergency responses.
  • Emergency Response: Be available for HV network outages or faults, often requiring travel to different sites nationwide.

Skills & Qualifications:

  • Qualified High Voltage Electrician with experience on 11kV, 33kV, 38kV, or higher systems.
  • Knowledge of overhead and underground transmission line systems.
  • Experience with substation equipment, including SCADA and protection relays.
  • Strong understanding of HV safety standards, live line procedures, and PPE requirements.
  • Physical fitness and willingness to work at height or in confined spaces.
  • Full driving licence is essential
