Summary

Murphy Geospatial is seeking an experienced and dynamic Head of Department to lead and elevate one of our most cutting edge and client facing, technologically advanced teams. This is not just a managerial role, it’s a client‑facing leadership opportunity for someone deeply passionate about Structural, Environmental and Geotechnical Monitoring, and delivering measurable value to high profile clients.

We’re looking for someone with strong technical roots, who also brings a natural flair for leadership, outbound client relationship building, and solution selling. You’ll be empowered to innovate, connect directly with clients, lead strategic project delivery, and grow our commercial footprint.

What You'll Do:
Department Strategy
  • Develop the department’s strategy in collaboration with the Directors and Senior managers, keeping in mind the company’s responsibilities to its shareholders, customers, employees, and other stakeholders.
  • Break this down into individual objectives and communicate how these fit into the wider Murphy Geospatial objectives.
  • Responsible for the department’s yearly financial budget and for achieving yearly sales targets with department managers’ input.
  • Responsible for research and innovation on new software and equipment.
  • Responsible for Sales and Marketing plans to support departmental strategy.
Sales & Business Development
  • Build and maintain relationships with existing clients to encourage repeat business and initiate a sales pipeline in line with the company’s Key Account Strategy.
  • Identify potential and current competitors and analyse their services and pricing strategies.
Tendering & Negotiation
  • Liaise with clients to assess their specific requirements and recommend appropriate solutions along with pricing proposals.
  • Engage with their internal team on their department, as required to ensure all proposals are in line with operational capabilities.
  • Engage with internal stakeholders, as required to ensure all proposals are in line with company processes, costing structures and operational capabilities.
  • Take a lead role in any dispute management as projects evolve, ensuring any learnings are implemented within the department.
  • Maintain client relationships throughout the project implementation phase.
People Management
  • Maintain regular communications with the team to ensure project plans are progressing to schedule and problems are being resolved as they arise.
  • Provide training and guidance to the team in exercising their roles and responsibilities.
  • Support human resource processes within the department around recruitment, performance management, employee relations etc.
  • Provide input into performance appraisals and final sign off on remuneration agreements.
Quality, Health & Safety
  • Promote positive engagement into the use and development of Quality Systems and ensure compliance with all regulations and internal policies.
  • Promote a safety culture and ensure any learnings from near misses or accidents are implemented.
  • Participate on the safety committee.
  • Work closely with external clients and employees with regards to various projects, reporting requirements and maintenance of required documentation.
General
  • Facilitate business growth by working together with clients as well as business partners (suppliers, subcontractors, JV partners, technology providers, etc.).
  • Support organisational change initiatives as they are rolled out across the business with department managers.
  • Provide input and support to other departments as they seek to implement improvements that will benefit the Company.
  • Financial: Support cash collection and billing optimisation.
  • Legal Risk Management: Understand contract processes and obligations; and possess awareness of UK law.
Role Requirements
  • 5+ years’ experience leading high‑performing teams within Monitoring, Geospatial Surveying, or related fields, with at least 3 years in a client‑facing leadership or departmental head role.
  • Excellent commercial awareness with the ability to spot opportunities, drive value, and influence stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated success in building and growing client relationships particularly in infrastructure, energy, or public sector delivery.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple technical projects and priorities simultaneously.
  • Degree in Geomatics, Geospatial Engineering, GIS and Remote Sensing, Civil Engineering, or similar.
  • Full, valid EU/Irish driving licence required.
