Job summary

Village Vets in Ashbourne is seeking an experienced RVN to join our emergency and critical care team. You will provide continuous nursing care to critically ill or injured patients and support veterinarians during emergency procedures.

We value strong clinical skills, resilience and compassion. A minimum of 2 years’ RVN experience is required, and ECC qualifications are desirable. Flexible hours are available with part-time or full-time options, with a salary in the stated range.

Qualifications

• Qualified and VCI registered RVN with current license.
• Minimum 2 years’ experience as a qualified RVN in small animal practice.
• ECC qualification or training is desirable.
• Experience in busy emergency hospital or referral setting is preferred.
• Strong clinical skills, resilience and compassion essential for urgent care.

Responsibilities

• Provide continuous nursing care to critically ill or injured patients and monitor vital signs.
• Support veterinarians during emergencies, including triage, resuscitation, wound management and surgery.
• Perform procedures such as IV catheter placement, medication administration and diagnostic tests.
• Assist with anaesthesia induction, monitoring and post‑operative recovery.
• Maintain infection control and a sterile environment.
• Communicate clearly with owners and provide treatment updates and aftercare guidance.
• Collaborate with vets, nurses and support staff for cohesive emergency care.
• Mentor junior team members in ECC protocols and techniques.
• Manage ECC equipment and monitor stock levels for efficient response.
• Keep detailed medical records and handovers between shifts.
• Engage in ongoing continuing education to advance ECC skills.

Location: Ashbourne

Reports to: Head Nurse/Assistant Hospital Manager

Schedule: Thursday to Sunday

Hours: Flexible, with part-time and full-time options available.

• Full-time: 40 hours per week, 4:30pm–2:30am
• Part-time: 32 hours per week, 5:30pm–1:30am

Salary: €37,500–€40,000 per annum, pro rata for part-time hours.

About the Role

• Provide continuous, attentive nursing care to critically ill or injured patients, monitoring vital signs and assessing pain levels
• Support veterinarians during emergency procedures, including triage, resuscitation, wound management, and surgery
• Carry out essential medical procedures such as placing IV catheters, administering medications and fluids, and performing diagnostic tests
• Assist with anaesthesia induction, monitoring, and post‑operative recovery for critical patients
• Maintain strict infection control standards and ensure a clean, sterile environment
• Communicate clearly and compassionately with pet owners, providing updates and guidance on treatment and aftercare
• Work closely with vets, nurses, and support staff to deliver cohesive, high‑quality emergency care
• Help train and mentor junior team members in ECC protocols and techniques
• Manage and maintain ECC equipment and monitor stock levels to support efficient emergency response
• Keep detailed, accurate medical records and provide thorough handovers between shifts
• Stay engaged in continuing education to maintain and advance your ECC skills

About You

• Qualified and VCI registered Veterinary Nurse (RVN)
• 2 years + years’ experience as a qualified RVN in small animal practice
• Further qualification specific to ECC is desirable
• Previous experience working in a busy emergency hospital and/or in a referral hospital is desirable
• This role demands strong clinical skills, resilience, and compassion to deliver high-quality care to patients in urgent need
• Highly motivated, hard-working, and a team player
