Job summary

CPL, a leading medical technology contractor, seeks an experienced Design Automation Engineer for a Galway onsite 12-month contract. You will troubleshoot automated manufacturing lines, support installation, and contribute to continuous improvement across electrical, mechanical, and software layers.

The role requires hands-on problem solving in a regulated environment with a focus on device reliability and process optimisation. Onsite work in Galway with project-based extensions is offered.

Qualifications

  • Demonstrable experience in automation and/or controls engineering.
  • Experience with Beckhoff Automation.
  • Hands-on troubleshooting in a manufacturing environment.
  • Experience with automated equipment and production lines.
  • Ability to diagnose issues across electrical, mechanical and software domains.
  • Experience in regulated industries, preferably medical devices.

Responsibilities

  • Troubleshoot and resolve issues on automated manufacturing lines.
  • Investigate downtime and perform root-cause analysis.
  • Implement corrective and preventive actions for equipment performance.
  • Support installation, commissioning, and startup of automation equipment.
  • Provide hands-on support during hypercare or ramp-up.
  • Assist software, controls, and system-level debugging.
  • Collaborate across electrical, mechanical, hardware and software components.
  • Maintain documentation and update procedures and specifications.
  • Collaborate cross‑functionally to deliver reliable automation solutions.

Role: Design Automation Engineer
Location: Galway - Onsite
Working Hours: 40 hours per week
Contract Type: 12-month contract + extensions
About the Company

Here at CPL, we are supporting a leading multinational medical technology organisation who are currently seeking to hire an experienced Design Automation Engineers for an initial 12-month contract.

Key responsibilities
  • Support troubleshooting and problem resolution on automated manufacturing lines.
  • Investigate equipment downtime and assist with root cause analysis.
  • Implement corrective and preventive actions to improve equipment performance and reliability.
  • Support installation, commissioning, and startup of new or modified automation equipment.
  • Provide hands-on support during hypercare or production ramp-up phases.
  • Assist with software, controls, and system-level debugging.
  • Support integration of electrical, mechanical, hardware, and software components.
  • Contribute to equipment improvement, standardisation, and continuous improvement activities.
  • Support validation, verification, and change control activities as required.
  • Maintain accurate technical documentation and support updates to procedures and specifications.
  • Collaborate cross‑functionally to deliver reliable automation solutions.
Required Experience
  • Demonstrable experience in automation and/or controls engineering.
  • Must have experience with Beckhoff Automation
  • Strong hands-on troubleshooting experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Experience supporting automated equipment and production lines.
  • Ability to diagnose issues across electrical, mechanical, and software domains.
  • Experience working in a regulated industry, ideally medical device or similar.
  • Strong problem-solving and communication skills.
Technical Skills
  • Experience with PLC-based control systems.
  • Allen-Bradley / Rockwell experience essential.
  • Experience with vision systems such as Cognex or Keyence preferred.
  • Exposure to Beckhoff, Epson robots, motion control, and HMI/SCADA (Ignition) systems desirable.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics and machine documentation.
  • Experience with commissioning, testing, and equipment support activities.
  • Knowledge of structured problem-solving and continuous improvement methods.
Education Requirements
  • Degree in Engineering, Science, or a related discipline.
