Job summary

Liberty IT, the tech arm of Liberty Mutual Insurance, is recruiting a Data Scientist in Galway. You will work at the intersection of traditional data science and ML, exploring generative AI, LLMs, and large language models.

The role blends research with practical deployment to solve real business problems. You’ll collaborate with Senior/Lead data scientists and stakeholders, deploying enterprise-scale data science products within a supportive, learning-focused environment.

Qualifications

• A third level qualification in Mathematics, Computer Science, Statistics or another quantitative field.
• A minimum of two years’ postgraduate relevant Data Science experience in a commercial environment or PhD with research experience in a Data Science role.
• Experience in creating, deploying and tuning complex, non linear predictive models using Python and data science tooling.
• Experience with big data concepts, predictive modelling, gen AI and research elements.
• Experience in technical communication with peers and non-technical stakeholders.

Responsibilities

• Research and develop solutions to complex business problems using large, unstructured datasets.
• Deliver high-quality products, models, or algorithms with senior team support, balancing technical quality and business outcomes.
• Collaborate with business stakeholders and Product Owners to understand customers and align work to requirements.
• Compare statistical languages, tools and packages to meet business needs.
• Develop team best practices for style, documentation and code management.
• Grow knowledge across the Data Science lifecycle and share learnings via talks or blogs.

Who you’ll be working with:

At Digital Progression, we research, assess, and experiment with emerging technologies, to unlock value for the business and build vertical enterprise capabilities.

Through a multidisciplinary research framework, and in partnership with expert communities across Liberty Mutual and external groups, we take emerging tech through the Digital Progression innovation pipeline. This starts with scanning potentially disruptive trends, through technical, readiness research and experimentation with Liberty use cases, to the creation of new technology driven capabilities.

The role will combine traditional data science and machine learning with technical research into areas such as generative AI, agentic systems, and large language models. LLM Assisted Development: At Liberty, our data science team has serval tools available to help them write code: GitHub Co Pilot and Claude Code. We are continuing to explore tools which can further enhance this offering.

Experience and skills we need:

• A third level qualification in Mathematics, Computer Science, Statistics or another quantitative field.

• MLOps exposure is desired.

• Knowledge and experience of deploying enterprise scale data science products.
• Active participation in knowledge sharing activities, both within the team and with wider non technical audiences.

What you’ll be doing:

• Research and develop solutions to complex business problems, working with large, unstructured datasets. Apply various exploratory data analysis techniques and processes to these datasets.
• With support from Senior, Principal and Lead Data Scientists, play a role in the delivery of high quality products, solutions, models, and/or algorithms in a timely manner. Make considerations between technical perfection and business outcome in the delivery of solutions.
• Partner with business stakeholders and Product Owners to fully understand your customers and align your work to their requirements. Communicate complex concepts to stakeholders in a manner that they can understand.
• Compare and contrast different statistical programming languages, tools and packages to make informed decisions on what technologies to use to meet the business requirements.
• Ensure accuracy through the implementation of a variety of approaches and mechanisms in line with best practices.
• Develop best practices for the team and coaches other team members on areas such as style, documentation and code management.
• Grow your knowledge in all components of the Data Science life cycle.
• Seek opportunities for you, and your team members, to share and celebrate what you’ve achieved through internal tech talks, blogging and external events.
