Overview of role
The Clinical Nurse Manager II for Medical Oncology Day Ward leads clinical leadership, operational oversight and governance of a specialist oncology and haematology day service, ensuring safe, high‑quality, patient‑centred care. The role provides coordinated systemic anti‑cancer therapies (SACT), supportive therapies, patient education and holistic care while promoting regulatory compliance and continuous improvement.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Professional / Clinical Leadership and Governance
- Maintain clinical focus, advocate for patients, provide education and training, conduct audit and research, and offer consultancy.
- Champion a strong patient focus, embedding nursing in the overall purpose, functions and ethical standards of clinical practice.
- Provide expert nursing leadership in oncology and haematology, ensuring safe and compliant SACT administration per NCCP, UPMC protocols and best practice guidelines.
- Oversee ARIA usage for chemotherapy verification, documentation accuracy, and CVAD management.
- Manage comprehensive patient assessment, toxicity management, escalation of care and emergency response.
- Ensure medication safety, documentation standards and infection prevention and control.
- Complete and act on clinical audits, risk assessments and safety initiatives.
- Support development and review of clinical policies and care pathways.
Direct Patient Care
- Deliver expert nursing care to oncology and haematology patients receiving SACT, immunotherapy, blood products and supportive interventions.
- Undertake comprehensive patient assessments, symptom evaluation, venepuncture, IV cannulation, and CVAD care.
- Administer systemic anti‑cancer therapies following protocols, guaranteeing patient safety.
- Respond swiftly to acute events such as anaphylaxis, extravasation, and other emergencies.
- Use ARIA to verify chemotherapy orders, review assessments, and document care.
- Monitor and evaluate treatment response, adjusting care plans in collaboration with MDT and patient/family.
- Coordinate investigations, treatment therapies and patient follow‑up.
- Communicate with patients, families and carers to assess needs and provide support, information and education.
- Offer psychological support and empathetic communication during stressful periods or bad news discussions.
- Implement symptom‑management strategies, self‑care education and escalation pathways.
- Uphold high standards of dignity, privacy, cultural sensitivity and patient advocacy.
Indirect Patient Care
- Serve as clinical role model and expert resource for nursing staff.
- Participate in MDT case reviews and senior nurse management sessions.
- Lead formulation and provision of evidence‑based supportive‑care pathways (PPPGs).
- Ensure survivorship care aligns with best‑practice guidelines and Safer Better Healthcare Standards.
- Maintain patient, family and carer privacy, dignity and confidentiality.
- Establish and improve collaboration procedures with UPMC Ireland Services and other organisations.
- Challenge any interaction failing to deliver quality patient service.
Managerial Responsibilities
- Act as clinical resource for all oncology and haematology staff.
- Lead daily unit coordination, ensuring patient flow and timely treatment access.
- Oversee ARIA and IPIMS scheduling and treatment chair utilisation.
- Manage staff allocation, skill mix and workload distribution.
- Develop, implement and update clinical pathways, protocols and guidelines.
- Collaborate with medical consultants and pharmacy for optimisation.
- Maintain clinical environment, equipment, medication and supplies safety and compliance.
- Lead and contribute to quality improvement initiatives.
- Represent the service locally, nationally and internationally.
- Maintain accurate ARIA records and support accreditation processes.
Learning and Development
- Maintain professional competence per NMBI Code of Conduct and Ethics.
- Provide leadership, supervision, mentorship and performance management.
- Support staff competency development in oncology and haematology, including SACT certification.
- Develop and implement staff engagement and development plans.
- Promote effective teamwork, conflict resolution and a positive working culture.
- Orient, supervise and support new staff appropriately.
- Facilitate MDT learning opportunities such as journal clubs and conferences.
Audit & Research
- Support audit programmes and implement recommendations.
- Maintain records of clinically relevant data aligned to national KPIs.
- Initiate and conduct nursing and MDT audit and research projects.
- Analyse, disseminate and integrate best evidence for oncology and haematology care.
Quality, Risk and Safety Responsibilities
- Evaluate audit results and research findings for quality improvement.
- Lead quality improvement initiatives and service development.
- Monitor performance metrics such as patient satisfaction, incident trends and resource use.
- Ensure compliance with NCCP, accreditation standards, JCI, HIQA and UPMC policies.
- Foster a culture of quality, safety and continuous learning.
Qualifications & Experience
- Registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI).
- Post‑registration Level 8 or higher qualification in Cancer Nursing (or equivalent).
- Minimum 5 years post‑registration experience in Cancer Nursing, 2 years managerial.
- Evidence of career development, continuing professional education and oncology nursing competence.
- Management or leadership training, or willingness to undertake.
- Ability to practice safely and effectively within scope.
