Job summary

Sigmar Recruitment is seeking an Automation Engineer Contractor to deliver automation engineering services across workshop and client-site environments. You will design, program and test PLC/HMI and SCADA systems, while preparing documentation and ensuring compliance with client standards.

The role involves travel across Ireland and collaboration with project managers, vendors, and clients to meet milestones and deliverables on time.

Qualifications

  • A Level 8 degree in Electrical Engineering, Automation and Control.
  • At least five years’ post-qualification experience in automation engineering.
  • Strong PLC programming experience with major platforms (Siemens/ Allen-Bradley/ ABB/ Schneider/ Omron).
  • Hands-on SCADA experience with ICONICS, InTouch, Wonderware, WinCC or equivalent.
  • Strong fault-finding and debugging skills across industrial control systems.
  • Good knowledge of automation systems and OO programming.
  • Ability to work independently and manage deliverables within projects.
  • Excellent written and spoken English and ability to document work.
  • Full driving licence and willingness to travel across Ireland.
  • Valid Safe Pass and Manual Handling certificates.

Responsibilities

  • Develop automation designs per project requirements and client standards.
  • Design and programme PLC and HMI systems across platforms.
  • Design and implement SCADA and telemetry systems.
  • Prepare functional design specs, manuals and drawings.
  • Test control panels and systems including FAT and SAT.
  • Diagnose faults and resolve issues in software and equipment.
  • Coordinate interfaces with clients, managers and vendors.
  • Provide progress updates and document handover artifacts.
  • Travel to project locations across Ireland.

Automation Engineer Contractor
About Your New Employer
  • Join an established Irish engineering company specialising in process control, automation and instrumentation.
  • Work on technically challenging water, wastewater, utilities and industrial projects across Ireland.
  • Gain exposure to the full project lifecycle, from control system design and programming through to testing, commissioning and handover.

Your new employer delivers automation and instrumentation solutions for complex infrastructure and industrial environments. Due to ongoing project requirements, they are seeking an experienced Automation Engineer Contractor to support the delivery of customer projects.

About Your New Job

As an Automation Engineer Contractor, you will provide automation engineering services across workshop and client-site environments. You will:

  • Develop control and automation designs in line with project requirements and applicable client standards.
  • Design and programme PLC and HMI systems using platforms such as Allen Bradley, Siemens, ABB, Schneider or Omron.
  • Design and implement SCADA and telemetry systems using platforms such as ICONICS, InTouch, Wonderware, WinCC or equivalent.
  • Prepare functional design specifications, operation and maintenance manuals, software documentation and electrical drawings.
  • Test control panels and automation systems, including Factory Acceptance Testing and Site Acceptance Testing.
  • Diagnose and resolve faults relating to control software, electrical equipment, instrumentation and computer systems.
  • Coordinate technical interfaces with clients, project managers and system vendors to identify suitable automation solutions.
  • Provide progress updates covering completed work, upcoming milestones, technical risks and decisions required.
  • Complete software backups, configuration records and technical documentation for project handover.

You will work independently while coordinating closely with project managers, clients, vendors and wider engineering teams. Assignments may involve travel to project locations across Ireland.

What Skills You Need
  • A Level 8 degree in Electrical Engineering, Automation and Control or a related engineering discipline.
  • At least five years’ post-qualification experience in automation engineering.
  • Strong PLC programming experience with one or more major platforms, such as Siemens, Allen Bradley, ABB, Schneider or Omron.
  • Practical SCADA experience with platforms such as ICONICS, InTouch, Wonderware, WinCC or equivalent.
  • Strong fault-finding and debugging skills across industrial control systems, electrical equipment and instrumentation.
  • Good knowledge of industrial automation systems and object-oriented programming.
  • The ability to work independently, manage agreed deliverables and contribute effectively to larger project teams.
  • Excellent written and spoken English, including the ability to prepare technical documentation and communicate with clients.
  • Full, clean driving licence and the ability to travel to agreed project locations.
  • Valid Safe Pass and Manual Handling certificates.

Experience delivering water, wastewater, utilities or power projects, as well as experience with instrumentation and measurement systems, would be advantageous.
