Solidaridad Indonesia and BASF are expanding their partnership through the Sustainable Palm Oil Livelihood Initiative (2023-2026) in East Kalimantan (specifically Kutai Timur and Paser districts). Building on previous successful projects in West Kalimantan and Lampung, this initiative helps independent smallholder farmers produce palm oil sustainably while improving their livelihoods.
To make technical project terms easy to understand, here is what the project focuses on:
- Independent Smallholder Farmers: Farmers who manage their own palm oil plots independently without being tied to a single plantation company.
- Good Agricultural and Management Practices (GAP/BMP): Simple, effective farming methods: proper fertilizing, pest control, and soil care that help farmers raise yields by 15% and increase income by 5-10%.
- International Standards (RSPO and EUDR): Helping 250 farmers qualify for RSPO (Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil) certification and comply with EUDR (European Union Deforestation Regulation) so their palm oil can be legally sold in European and global markets.
- Supply Chain Traceability: Using technology (such as smartphone mapping) to trace palm oil fruit from small farms directly to mills and international buyers like BASF suppliers (DSN and APICAL).
- Women's Empowerment and Social Inclusion: Ensure at least 30% of participants are women, support female leaders, and help families create additional income sources beyond palm oil.
Objectives of the Assignment
The main goal of this assignment is to translate technical project targets into an authentic, human‑centred visual narrative. The content will support global reporting, stakeholder presentations, public awareness campaigns, and individual fundraising campaigns. The photographer must capture genuine stories of local farmers adapting to climate change, preventing forest fires, and improving their livelihoods.
Scope of Work and Key Themes
The photographer will visit Kaliorang (Kutai Timur) and Paser to document five core themes using a natural, non‑staged documentary style:
- 1. Sustainable Farming in Action (GAP/BMP): Documenting farmers actively applying sustainable practices in their palm oil plots.
- 2. Climate Change Adaptation and Challenges: Capturing how farmers experience extreme weather (severe droughts and heavy rains), how these events impact their work and families, and how they adapt their farming methods to survive and thrive.
- 3. Forest Fire Prevention and Global Awareness: Providing powerful visual stories explaining why forest fires happen in Kalimantan, their impact on local communities and nature, and how farmers work to prevent them. This theme connects with global audiences (including Europe) who relate to fire challenges.
- 4. Personal Stories for Individual Fundraising: Creating two complete personal profile packages (one male farmer and one female farmer). Each profile requires environmental portraits, a photo story, and short interview quotes detailing their specific climate struggles (droughts, floods) and their problem‑solving efforts.
- 5. Women's Empowerment and Traceability: Showing female leaders in cooperative meetings and fieldwork, alongside farmers using technology (like smartphone mapping apps) for supply chain transparency.
Expected Deliverables and Requirements
The photographer will deliver 60-80 high‑resolution, professionally edited photographs organized in labelled sub‑folders, accompanied by text descriptions and interview notes.
Technical, Ethical, and Field Guidelines
- Documentary Style: Focus on candid, authentic moments. Avoid artificial or stiff 'handshake' poses.
- Golden Hour Lighting: Schedule outdoor plantation shoots during early morning (06:30-09:00) or late afternoon (15:30-17:30) to avoid harsh shadows.
- Captions and Interviews: Every key photo set must include descriptive captions. Brief interviews must be recorded for featured farmers.
- Ethical Consent: All identifiable subjects must sign an Informed Consent Form provided by Solidaridad before photography sessions start.
Itinerary and Logistics Requirements
- Dedicated Travel Days: Travel between Kutai Timur (North/East) and Paser (South) takes 10 to 14 hours overland. Travel days must be separate from shooting days to preserve golden‑hour light.
- Timeline: Maximum of 10 days covering Paser and Kutai Timur, including travel days, no later than the early second week of November.
- Heavy‑Duty Vehicle: The photographer must arrange a reliable heavy‑duty vehicle to safely access remote, unpaved plantation tracks in all weather conditions.
Solidaridad aims to be an equal opportunity employer. Women candidates are encouraged to apply.
