What this job can offer you

This is an exciting time to join Remote and make a personal difference in the global HR-tech space as a Managing Counsel, Product (Please note, this is not a People Manager role). We are looking for a talented and eager lawyer, who is interested in helping with our team’s mission, namely: to deliver pragmatic and innovative legal solutions for Remote’s products and stakeholders, while protecting Remote from unacceptable risk.

Remote’s well established Legal team is a bunch of friendly, talented highly motivated lawyers from a whole host of different countries, with some awesome experiences.

As Remote grows and adds new products, the volume and complexity of issues scale across 90+ jurisdictions. You will be a legal partner to Product, Engineering, Privacy, and Security, with emphasis on HRIS and AI/ML features, translating complex rules into clear, shippable requirements and striking the right balance between compliance and commerciality.

More specifically, this role is expected to:

  • Lead AI and HRIS product compliance, partnering with Product, Engineering, Security and the Privacy team;
  • Embed a risk-based legal review into product development workflows;
  • Own product T&Cs for HRIS and AI features (output ownership, training use, acceptable use, transparency/disclaimers).
  • Stand up core Product AI governance (model inventory, risk classification, human oversight, bias/testing, incident response alignment).
What you bring
  • Qualified Lawyer: Seasoned lawyer with extensive experience on Product counseling (jurisdiction agnostic; multiple bars a plus)
  • Product Counsel Experience in technology, with prior HR-tech exposure (EOR/PEO/HRIS/Payroll) advising at scale across multiple jurisdictions.
  • Strong command of emerging AI frameworks (e.g., EU AI Act, UK approach, U.S. state/federal developments, Canada AIDA) and their interplay with data protection (GDPR/CCPA) and employment transparency rules.
  • In-house Experience: Bonus - In-house legal experience preferred
  • Startup Experience: Bonus - Experience in fast-paced start-up.
  • Tech Passion: Passionate about tech and HR tech products.
  • Skills: Excellent analytical and organizational skills.
  • Language: Writes and speaks fluent English.
  • Tools: Tech-savvy with Slack, Juro, Notion, Google Drive, or equivalent.
  • Experience working remotely is considered a plus.
Key Responsibilities
Legal Expertise
  • Own HRIS and AI product counseling end-to-end, including AI impact assessments, model cards, and risk controls with Privacy/Security.
  • Draft and negotiate product terms, and AI-specific clauses as required (training/usage of data & metadata, output/IP ownership, acceptable use, transparency), in collaboration with Commercial Legal team.
  • Proactively monitor new AI and tech regulations and translate those into concrete, actionable steps for product, design and engineering teams.
  • Manage external counsel on complex, multi-jurisdictional issues; drive clear, practical outcomes.
  • Deliver targeted enablement (Trainings or office hours).
  • Partner with Privacy & Security on DPIAs/TIAs, incident response, and vendor/LLM diligence.
  • Complex Matters: Figures out solutions rather than just escalating problems.
Bonus Points
  • Experience working with AI/ML legal and compliance issues.
  • Shipped at least one AI feature in production and built the accompanying legal/governance framework.
  • Experience working remotely.
