Purpose of the role

As the Indonesian Senior Journalist Bilingual Reporter you will primarily report in English for our UK and global audiences to the highest editorial standards. You will reversion your English content for Bahasa Indonesia and will be expected, from time to time, to report in Bahasa Indonesia for our Indonesia audiences. Indonesia is much underserved by English language content – you will be expected to demonstrate a clear understanding of how to illustrate and choose content that will be of interest to an international English‑speaking audience. This content will be reversioned by our language services including the Indonesian service.

The World Service broadcasts on multiple platforms to reach its weekly audience of approximately 468 million globally, including TV, radio and digital platforms such as social media and text for online. BBC Indonesia is part of the 16 services of the Asia Region and is spread across Jakarta and London. The multimedia service has a thriving online and social media presence.

Your key responsibilities and impact
  • Broadcasts in English and Bahasa Indonesia on news stories and events in a manner which is timely, authoritative, lively and interesting, and readily understandable by a non‑specialist audience.
  • Familiar with online and video and reporting tools and techniques to reach new audiences on digital platforms.
  • Provides expert advice on Indonesian affairs to the wider BBC News teams as and when required, leading in reporting, in English, on international reactions to the news events in Indonesia for TV, radio, online and social media outputs.
  • Collaborate with colleagues from regional BBC Languages, News Online, World News in Beijing and Newsgathering in Singapore.
  • Work to the Asia Pacific Bureaux Editor in Beijing, developing story ideas and treatments for English output and forward planning.
  • Maintains and promotes best practice in safety and high‑risk management in a region prone to natural disasters, terrorism and other emergencies.
  • Carries out all BBC policy regarding business expenditure including timely and accurate filing of expenses claims.
  • Plays an active role in helping the Indonesian Service achieve digital transformation.
  • Assists the BBC Indonesian News Editor as required in maintaining effective relationships with partners and external stakeholders, e.g. publishers syndicating BBC content, government and regulators.
  • Requires flexible work and travel at short notice for reporting assignments in Indonesia and South‑East Asia.
Your skills and experience
Essential criteria
  • Fluent in English and Bahasa; broadcast standard proficient as well as excellent written language and grammar skills; skills in digital, TV and radio.
  • Clear understanding of social media and content that works for social media.
  • Proven ability to deliver clear and concise stories in English for TV/Radio programmes, alongside highly developed writing skills, to deliver TV/Radio scripts along with text stories for the BBC website; also demonstrate these skills for the Indonesian service.
