Job summary

South China Morning Post SCMP is seeking a backend engineer to join our Product & Technology team in Causeway Bay, Hong Kong. You will design and maintain digital platform features, including subscriptions and web publishing applications, contributing to a world-class news product.

You will collaborate with product managers, UI/UX designers, and fellow engineers, using AI-assisted tools to accelerate prototyping and code generation while upholding strict security and architectural standards.

Qualifications

• Diploma or Degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.
• 2+ years of hands-on back-end development experience using Node.js.
• Knowledge of Docker and Kubernetes is desired; experience with AI tools is a plus.

Responsibilities

Purpose of the Role:

We are looking for an engineer to join our product engineering team, which will be responsible for building and maintaining a world-class digital news product on online platforms with subscriptions, eg. www.scmp.com. This role will design web solution architecture and support feature development on an agile team, delivering key features to a global audience to support SCMP’s initiatives.

In this role, you will:

• Develop and maintain scalable solutions for SCMP's digital platforms, focusing on website platform features, subscriptions and web publishing applications.
• Work closely with cross-functional teams (product managers, UI/UX designers, and fellow engineers) to conceptualize, build, test, and deliver impactful products.
• Utilize Agentic coding and AI-assisted development tools (e.g., OpenCode, GitHub Copilot, LLM agents) to accelerate prototyping, code generation, and testing.
• Act as the human-in-the-loop to critically review, refactor, and audit AI-generated code, ensuring it meets strict performance, security, and architectural standards.
• Conduct thorough code reviews to ensure code quality, maintainability, and adherence to architectural standards.
• Participate in Agile events including daily stand-ups, sprint plannings, refinement meetings, and retrospectives.

Skills and Experience that will lead to success:

• Diploma or Degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.
• 2+ years of hands-on, relevant back-end development experience using Node.js.
• Knowledge of Docker and Kubernetes is desired.
• Experience with implementing A/B testing or E-commerce features is a plus.
• Experience with AI development tools and Agentic Coding, accompanied by strong debugging skills to validate AI-generated outputs.
• A strong passion for developing high-quality web applications.
• An open-minded, highly responsible, and self-motivated approach to teamwork.
• Active contributions to open-source projects.
• Excellent communication skills with proficiency in English and Chinese (Cantonese or Mandarin).

Work location will be at Causeway Bay office.
