Lead Mechanical Engineer
Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Lead Mechanical Engineer to support the development and manufacturing of innovative consumer hardware products from engineering development through New Product Introduction (NPI) and production ramp.
This is a highly hands‑on role requiring a strong combination of mechanical engineering expertise, product development experience, supplier management, and factory NPI execution. The ideal candidate will be comfortable working directly with contract manufacturers, suppliers, and cross‑functional engineering teams across Hong Kong and Shenzhen.
The engineer will be expected to work closely with factories during EVT, DVT, PVT, and production builds, helping identify and resolve mechanical, tooling, assembly, quality, and manufacturing issues in real time.
Fluency in both English and Mandarin is required.
Key Responsibilities
Mechanical Engineering & Product Development
- Lead mechanical engineering activities from concept development through production.
- Review and develop mechanical designs, 3D CAD models, 2D drawings, specifications, and engineering documentation.
- Evaluate product architecture, materials, manufacturing processes, tolerances, and assembly methods.
- Identify mechanical design risks and recommend practical solutions to improve manufacturability, reliability, cost, and performance.
- Work closely with industrial design, electrical engineering, firmware, product management, and manufacturing teams to resolve cross‑functional issues.
- Support design reviews, engineering builds, prototype development, and design verification activities.
NPI & Factory Support
- Provide hands‑on engineering support during EVT, DVT, PVT, pilot production, and production ramp.
- Travel regularly to manufacturing facilities in Shenzhen and the Greater Bay Area to support builds and resolve issues on the factory floor.
- Work directly with factory engineering, tooling, quality, and production teams to identify and close build issues.
- Troubleshoot mechanical and assembly problems during NPI builds and drive issues to resolution.
- Review build yields, failure modes, workmanship issues, dimensional results, and other manufacturing data.
- Support tooling trials, fixture development, process validation, and assembly line optimization.
- Ensure engineering changes are properly communicated and implemented at the factory.
- Help establish and maintain manufacturing documentation, including assembly procedures, work instructions, inspection requirements, and engineering change documentation.
Supplier & Manufacturing Engineering
- Work directly with contract manufacturers, component suppliers, tooling suppliers, and other manufacturing partners.
- Evaluate manufacturing processes and provide recommendations on DFM/DFA.
- Review supplier designs, tooling concepts, manufacturing proposals, and engineering changes.
- Support RFQs, supplier technical evaluations, and manufacturing feasibility assessments.
- Identify opportunities to improve product cost, quality, manufacturability, and production efficiency.
- Help manage technical communication between the product development team and China‑based manufacturing partners.
Technical Problem Solving
- Take ownership of complex mechanical and manufacturing problems and drive them toward timely resolution.
- Perform root‑cause analysis using structured engineering methodologies.
- Develop and evaluate corrective actions and verify their effectiveness.
- Balance engineering requirements with practical manufacturing constraints, cost, schedule, and product quality.
- Communicate technical risks, issues, and recommendations clearly to both technical and non‑technical stakeholders.
Required Qualifications
- 8+ years of relevant mechanical engineering experience, preferably in consumer electronics, consumer products, hardware, or other high‑volume manufactured products.
- Demonstrated experience taking products from engineering development through NPI and mass production.
- Strong understanding of mechanical design, materials, tolerancing, DFM/DFA, tooling, and manufacturing processes.
- Hands‑on experience supporting EVT/DVT/PVT or equivalent NPI builds.
- Experience working directly with factories and manufacturing suppliers in China.
- Strong understanding of injection molding, CNC machining, sheet metal, die casting, stamping, and other common manufacturing processes.
- Ability to read and review mechanical drawings, GD&T, CAD models, and technical specifications.
- Strong problem‑solving and root‑cause analysis capabilities.
- Willingness and ability to travel regularly between Hong Kong, Shenzhen, and nearby manufacturing locations.
- Strong communication, organization, and project management skills.
- Ability to work independently and effectively in a fast‑paced product development environment.
- Fluent written and spoken English and Mandarin Chinese.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working with consumer electronics, connected devices, toys, appliances, sporting goods, or other complex consumer hardware.
- Experience managing mechanical engineering activities across multiple suppliers.
- Experience with contract manufacturers and major China‑based manufacturing ecosystems.
- Familiarity with quality systems and manufacturing methodologies and process validation.
- Experience with tolerance stack‑up analysis and mechanical reliability testing.
- Experience supporting tooling development and mold trials.
- Experience working with international product development teams, particularly teams based in the US or Europe.
- Experience with SolidWorks, Creo, NX, or similar mechanical CAD platforms.
Working Model
- Employment Type: Contract
- Working Environment: Hybrid, with significant on‑site factory support
- Factory Travel: Regular travel to Shenzhen and other manufacturing locations in the Greater Bay Area is expected, particularly during NPI builds.
- Language: English and Mandarin required
- Engagement: Expected to support projects from engineering development through NPI and production ramp.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate is a hands‑on mechanical engineering leader who understands both product design and how products are actually manufactured in China.
They should be equally comfortable reviewing CAD and engineering drawings, sitting in a design review with an international engineering team, troubleshooting a mechanical issue on a factory floor, and working directly with a Chinese supplier to implement a practical solution.
This role is best suited to someone who can take ownership of mechanical engineering issues, communicate effectively across cultures and functions, and drive products from engineering development into successful mass production.
