Hong Kong International School is seeking a laboratory logistics technician to support science teachers with equipment, chemicals, and resources for labs. You will manage prep rooms, stock, and safety procedures while coordinating with teachers on upcoming experiments.

GENERAL DUTIES
  • The preparation and setting up of the practical requirements of the teaching staff in the appropriate room or laboratory.
  • Assist/attend Science meetings and activities.
  • Check and Restock used items
  • Meet regularly with each teacher/course team to go over the upcoming labs or curriculum needs.
  • Position works for 10.5 months per year Aug-June.
KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY:
Organization of departmental chemical and equipment resources.
  • Trains staff OR ORGANISE staff to be trained to use equipment as requested.
  • Assist teachers and students to locate materials.
  • Organize prep room in a manner that all teachers can find items if necessary.
  • Give advice and have KNOWLEDGE on the use and storage of toxic and dangerous materials.
  • Acquire relevant catalogues and materials.
  • Distribute all relevant information to staff.
Daily preparation of experiments and support for science teachers.
  • Maintain an efficient work area. (collecting equipment upon completion of labs)
  • Obtain the relevant resources.
  • Determine appropriate cleaning practices.
  • Use appropriate safety equipment.
  • Work in accordance with safety procedures.
  • Proper storage, use, and disposal of all restricted materials in accordance with legislated and accepted environmental and safety laws.
  • Maintain existing biological materials.
  • Monitor and maintain stock-take of chemicals
  • The cleaning of lab ware on an on-going basis during the day that a lab is going on.
  • The sterilization of utensils
  • The storage of chemicals and equipment in the appropriate area after their use.
  • The maintenance and minor repair of equipment. Thoroughly check ahead of usage and before
  • re-storing for the following year that equipment is working properly.
  • Check with Department Head about repair, discarding and/or replacing any broken equipment.
  • The safe and proper disposal of dangerous and toxic chemicals.
  • Going to local markets for purchase of disposable items for class use.
Filing and logistical organization of purchase orders.
  • Complete order forms, record and receipt orders and forward relevant information to Department Chair for approval and then forwarding to the Accounts Department.
Assist with departmental stock taking and preparation of the annual budget bid.
  • Assist in the development of the Department’s budget.
  • Track materials purchased (amount and cost) during the year
  • Keep note and follow up of all "back orders".
  • Costing and feasibility of repairs to equipment.
Administrative support and assistance for Department Chair.
Liaise with local suppliers /purchasing office personnel.
  • Actively track down local (HK), regional (China, Singapore, Philippines, Thailand, Japan, Taiwan, Korea, Malaysia) and over-seas sources for materials.
Upgrade skills with certified training courses in areas needed for lab and science skills necessary to perform duties to support teachers and maintain safety in the labs and prep room.
In class laboratory support of teachers, where appropriate.
  • Assist in the classroom when appropriate and requested. Instructions given to students on an individual and group basis.
  • In the classroom, alert teacher to inappropriate student behavior.
  • In the classroom, assist maintaining safe practices.
  • Set up labs for students (materials prepared and stations set up) as per instructor’s directions.
  • Assist teacher in the classrooms with labs as requested,
  • Assist teachers with practical activities in the classroom as required, including demonstrating and assisting staff and students with practical activities.
Other
  • Supervision of students taking make up tests.
  • Undertake other duties and functions as required that will impact and strengthen the contributions of the department and overall operations of the school.
Minimum requirements and qualifications:
Education:
  • Tertiary qualifications in an appropriate field of study.
Experience:
  • Technical and/or academic background in laboratory work.
Required skills:
  • Responsible, independent, knowledgeable (particularly in chemistry), proficiency in Google apps for Education. Flexible and with a good sense of humor.
