China Economist Role September 2026

Capital Group is seeking to add an experienced economist to expand its China economic research in close collaboration with the existing Capital Strategy Research team ("CSR") and the Investment Group. CSR is a unit within Capital’s Investment Group with a team of specialists who provide high-quality, original and relevant economic, political, accounting and industry research that empowers investment professionals to achieve superior, long-term investment results and enhances our client-facing efforts. Based in Hong Kong, the economist will be the second CSR economist focused on China macro research, adding depth to our existing coverage and reflecting both the importance of China to Capital Group’s investment process and the continued growth of our business in Asia. The role of the CSR Economist is to conduct and clearly communicate original, investment-relevant research on China’s economy and policy environment. The economist will work closely with the Investment Group, with a particular focus on partnering with equity investors while also supporting fixed income investment discussions.

Primary responsibilities/essential functions:
  • Research and Analysis: Conduct applied economic research on China with medium- and long-term relevance to investors, including growth, monetary and fiscal policy and structural economic change. Connect macroeconomic and policy developments to implications for companies, industries and financial markets. Draw on economic data, company and industry research, and external perspectives to develop differentiated insights and independent views. Place developments in China within a broader regional and global context where relevant.
  • Investment Partnership: Bring macroeconomic perspectives to company, industry and thematic discussions, while using bottom-up investment research to challenge and refine macro views. Support fixed income investors on China-related macroeconomic, policy and market questions.
  • Broader CSR Contributions: Build strong relationships across CSR and the Investment Group, acting as a connector across teams and geographies. Contribute to broader CSR research, global outlook work and relevant Greater China research trips. Participate in Capital Group outreach efforts, including relevant client-facing work. Advance CSR’s economic analysis by contributing original frameworks, datasets and research approaches, while maintaining high research standards and sound judgment.
Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated passion for economics and responding to investor-relevant questions, with a clear desire to build a career as a buy-side economist.
  • Master’s or PhD in a relevant discipline preferred.
  • 5–10 years of relevant professional experience, with deep expertise in China’s economy and policymaking environment.
  • Strong economic judgment and ability to develop differentiated views from incomplete or imperfect information.
  • Demonstrated ability to connect economic and policy developments to their implications for investors.
  • Strong understanding of China’s complex political and policy environment and its implications for the economy and investors.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English; Mandarin Chinese proficiency is preferred.
  • Self-directed, intellectually curious and collaborative; willing to formulate and defend independent views while incorporating feedback.
  • Team-oriented, with a strong desire to share knowledge and be useful to the Investment Group.
Benefits:
  • Enjoy generous time-away and health benefits from day one, with the opportunity for flexible work options.
  • Receive 2-for-1 matching gifts for your charitable contributions and the opportunity to secure annual grants for the organizations you love.
  • Access on-demand professional development resources that allow you to hone existing skills and learn new ones.
  • In addition to a highly competitive base salary, per plan guidelines, restrictions and vesting requirements, you also will be eligible for an individual annual performance bonus, plus Capital’s annual profitability bonus plus a retirement plan where Capital contributes 15% of your eligible earnings.
