UKHSA’s remit is to protect the health of the nation from infectious diseases and other external threats to health.

This role provides highly specialised scientific services related to radiation protection, including radiation surveys, assessment of X‑ray equipment, electromagnetic field generators, lasers and related scientific measurements, laboratory work and mathematical modelling. Two positions (Leeds and Chilton) are available.

• Visit commercial clients (dental practices, airports, etc.) to carry out technical assessments of X‑ray equipment, electromagnetic field generators and lasers.
• Review assessment results, client questionnaires and produce assessment reports for all types of radiation generators, including routine and critical examination/acceptance tests.
• Assist with technical project work involving scientific measurements, laboratory work and mathematical modelling.
• Assess and comment on dose measurements to dental patients.
• Provide medical physics expertise for optimisation of dental X‑ray exposures and quality assurance.
• Recommend improvements to technical protocols and advise line managers.
• Deal with technical queries from staff and clients.
• Carry out leak tests on client premises and routine preparation and analysis of samples in the counting laboratory.
• Assist with testing and maintenance of radiation protection instrumentation.
• Contribute to training courses run by the department.
• Provide monitoring assistance as specified in the RCCE Emergency Plan.

Support includes a comprehensive development scheme, discussions of professional performance and training needs, mandatory training (e.g. fire safety, information governance), and participation in internal and external training events.

The post holder will communicate regularly with scientific staff, administrative staff, commercial clients and training event participants, ranging from shop‑floor staff to senior managers.

• Science degree or equivalent in a science discipline, or significant experience in scientific support of radiation protection services.
• Knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Access, PowerPoint, Excel).
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Technical competence in making measurements and strong numeracy.
• Ability to work accurately, consistently and under pressure, prioritising workload.
• Full UK driving licence.

• Good organisational skills and ability to handle data and documentation.
• Experience with legislative documents relevant to the role.
