Job Overview

To support the operations of our busy pump hire branch, Selwood invites applications for the position of Yardsperson/Relief Driver to join our friendly team at our London branch site. This role provides vital support to branch operations, delivering pumps and equipment on time to meet customer expectations.

Responsibilities
Yard Responsibilities
  • Keep the yard and workshops clean and tidy at all times.
  • Assist with loading and unloading of lorries, checking paperwork and reporting missing, damaged goods or fuel charges.
  • Assist fitting staff as required with lifting, moving tasks in depot or on‑site.
  • Clean hire equipment prior to workshop entry, using pressure/steam‑cleaning equipment.
  • Be polite, cooperative with staff/customers and promote the company.
  • Communicate accurately with supervisors, colleagues and customers regarding job specifications, ETA’s, missing/damaged items and obtaining signatures when delivering/collecting.
  • Comply with all PPE requirements.
LGV Responsibilities
  • Carry out work in compliance with Department of Transport Regulations and the Highway Code, ensuring safety for all.
  • Maintain full compliance with tachograph operation and drivers' hours legislation, including digital tachographs.
  • Observe Working Time Directive for mobile workers; record all breaks on the tachograph.
  • Carry out risk visual assessment before loading/unloading, including parking/stopping places.
  • Ensure loading/unloading is safe and efficient, positioning loads securely to avoid overloading axles.
  • Safely install pumping equipment using lorry‑mounted crane.
  • Conduct daily vehicle maintenance and defect checks; report defects promptly.
  • Assist with scheduling 6‑weekly safety inspections and liaise with manager and garage.
  • Be available for on‑call duties and rota as required.
  • Maintain vehicle cleanliness: wash exterior, clean interior, sweep load bed regularly.
  • Maintain vehicle log book, crane maintenance schedule, operating instructions and LOLER certificates.
  • Understand and support satellite tracking device usage for asset control.
  • Match items and quantities to branch paperwork and record discrepancies; sign for hirer when required.

  • Reliability is essential.
