Job summary

DPD is seeking an experienced Yard Technician to join the VMU team in the UK. You will inspect, service, maintain and repair a large fleet, ensuring peak safety, compliance and operational readiness.

You will diagnose mechanical and electrical faults, service components, and keep detailed records to support MOT readiness, while collaborating with fellow technicians to maintain high workshop standards. The role emphasizes adherence to DVSA regulations, with a strong focus on safety, efficiency,

Qualifications

• Proven experience in a Heavy Goods/Heavy Plant role.
• NVQ Level 3 in Heavy Vehicle Maintenance and repair (or equivalent).
• Up-to-date knowledge of roadworthiness guidelines and DVSA requirements.
• Strong ability to read technical manuals, diagnostic reports and repair manuals.

Responsibilities

• Perform routine safety inspections in line with DVSA requirements.
• Diagnostics and repair of mechanical, electrical, pneumatic and hydraulic faults on the DPD fleet.
• Repair and replacement of components including engines, transmissions, brakes, suspension, steering, electrical, exhaust and emission systems.
• Prepare vehicles for MOT testing and ensure compliance with safety standards.
• Maintain accurate service records, defect reports and inspection documentation.
• Ensure road safety regulations and legal compliance are met.
• Use diagnostic equipment to identify faults and resolve issues efficiently.
• Maintain a clean, safe workshop and ensure proper use of tools and diagnostic systems.
• Collaborate with other technicians and VMU operatives.

Education

NVQ Level 3 in Heavy Vehicle Maintenance and repair (or equivalent)

Job description

We are currently recruiting an experienced and highly motivated Yard Technician to join our team of highly skilled technicians. As the successful Yard Technician, you will report to the VMU Manager and be part of the team responsible for inspecting, servicing, maintaining, and repairing the DPD HGV fleet, made up of approximately 1500 tractor units and 3000 trailers. You will ensure that the fleet is maintained to the highest standard of safety, is fully compliant with DVSA regulations, and remains operationally efficient by minimising vehicle downtime. Working in a time-critical parcel distribution environment, your key accountabilities will include;

• Performing routine scheduled safety inspections in accordance with DVSA requirements.
• Diagnostics and repair of mechanical, electrical, pneumatic and hydraulic faults on the various vehicles within the DPD fleet
• Completing repairs and replacements on components, including:
• Engines and transmissions
• Brake systems
• Suspension systems
• Steering systems
• Electrical systems and diagnostics
• Exhaust and emission systems
• Preparing vehicles to a high standard for MOT testing and ensuring all compliance standards are met.
• Maintaining accurate service records, defect reports, and inspection documentation.
• Ensuring vehicles meet road safety regulations and legal compliance standards.
• Using diagnostic equipment and software to conduct systematic fault identification and efficiently resolve mechanical and electrical faults in modern HGV systems.
• Maintain a clean, organised and safe workshop environment in accordance with health and safety standards.
• Ensure tools, equipment, and diagnostic systems are maintained and used correctly.
• Working collaboratively with other technicians, VMU technical operatives and management

Proven experience working within a similar Heavy Goods or Heavy Plant role.

• Hold relevant qualifications such as NVQ Level 3 in Heavy Vehicle Maintenance and repair (or equivalent).
• An up-to-date knowledge of the guide to maintaining roadworthiness.
• Strong knowledge of heavy vehicle mechanical, electrical and braking systems.
• Be a team player who can also work independently.
• Ability to read technical manuals, diagnostic reports and repair manuals.
• Excellent problem-solving and diagnostic skills.
• Good organisational and time management skills with the ability to work effectively under pressure and meet deadlines.
