Gloucester, Swindon and Oxford cluster

Royal Mail is looking to add an experienced Workshop Manager to its Gloucester, Swindon and Oxford sites. As the Workshop Manager you will play a pivotal role in the delivery of cultural change. You will be accountable for the performance of your Workshop, with specific accountability for delivering performance against all key Maintenance scorecard indicators, including safety, legal, cost, people and stakeholder performance measures.

This is a fantastic time to join the Royal Mail Fleet team as we progress toward net zero, targeting an all-electric delivery fleet by 2035. Over 50,000 vehicles and trailer assets—from purchasing and selling vehicles to providing maintenance, accident repairs, and managing fuel and supplier contracts—should be exciting for anyone wishing to pursue a career involving vehicle asset management.

About the Role

You will be critical to ensuring the delivery of Fleet performance and for meeting the requirements of the Operator in the most efficient and cost-effective way.

  • Be accountable for compliance with legal and RM safety policies and meet safety targets while delivering maintenance services and optimizing cost performance & forecasting through resource planning and booking tools.
  • Be responsible for optimizing the efficiency of Fleet Workshops to meet industry standard performance levels and for deploying changes relating to Fleet Workshops.
  • Ensure effective engagement, communication and coaching to support and develop the Fleet Workshop team.
  • Be accountable for the achievement of all agreed targets, including internal Customer targets with SLAs through effective performance management techniques.
  • Actively deploy, manage and support the maintenance of ISO 9001 quality standard within Fleet Workshops and support Continuous Improvement activity.
  • Effectively manage the local IR interface, working collaboratively with union colleagues to deliver change.
About You

For this role you need to be fully qualified to at least advanced level (IMI Level 3) in Light or Heavy vehicle maintenance & repair or an equivalent qualification. You are an established team leader with relevant industry knowledge and experience of dispersed maintenance operations.

  • Effectively manage and build relations with stakeholders.
  • Influence and deliver results through people.
  • Manage and build relations with Trade Union partners.
  • Lead, develop and coach to drive performance improvement.
  • All Workshop Manager roles require a high degree of flexibility to ensure effective cover across multiple shift operations; the successful candidate may be required to travel to other sites within your area of responsibility.

Because this role requires you to travel between sites, Royal Mail will make a monthly £375 contribution to the rental payments for your chosen Job Need Car.

Extra Benefits
  • Family friendly support – enhanced maternity pay, paternity leave, adoption leave and shared parental leave.
  • Discounts and offers – over 800 offers to help you save on groceries, days out, holidays and household bills*.
  • Supportive and generous sick pay.
  • Wellbeing – 24/7 access to services and tools to help you get the most out of life, from mental health to financial support.
  • *Available only to permanent employees.
Next Steps

The next stage of the selection process will be a face‑to‑face interview consisting of competency‑based and role‑specific questions, a presentation and a scenario exercise. We plan to hold interviews on w/c 17th at our Swindon Workshop.

We understand that candidates may not meet all the criteria for the role. If your experience is different, but you have relevant skills we’d love to hear from you.

Closing Date: 9th November. Please note, this advert may close early if the appropriate number of applications has been reached.
