Job summary

BAE Systems Sheffield is seeking a Welding Engineer to join our defence manufacturing team. You will ensure welding quality, safety and regulatory compliance across design, operations and quality functions, bringing complex concepts into production.

Qualifications

  • Proven experience developing Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS) and PQRs.
  • Knowledge of ISO 3834, PED and related quality standards.
  • Experience in regulated industries such as defence, aerospace, oil & gas.

Responsibilities

  • Investigate welding defects and technical queries with manufacturing teams.
  • Develop and maintain Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS) ensuring compliance.
  • Review welding and NDT non-conformances and support root cause analyses.

Job Description:

Working at the forefront of the UK’s artillery manufacturing resurgence, this role offers the opportunity to contribute to nationally significant defence programmes that support both UK and international customers. As a Welding Engineer, you will play a key role in ensuring the quality, safety and compliance of advanced manufacturing and fabrication activities, helping to bring multi-faceted engineering designs into production. Working across design, operations and quality functions, you will support the delivery of critical products that strengthen defence capability and industrial growth.

Core duties:
  • Investigate welding defects and technical queries, collaborating with manufacturing teams to improve processes and working instructions
  • Develop and maintain Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS), ensuring compliance with customer, regulatory and quality requirements
  • Review welding and NDT non-conformances, supporting root cause analyses, corrective actions and successful resolution
  • Support continuous improvement goals, identifying opportunities to enhance welding quality, efficiency and manufacturing performance
  • Maintain accurate welding documentation, certification and traceability records while coordinating qualifications, inspections and external compliance activities
Essential Skills:
  • Demonstratable experience developing and qualifying Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS) and Procedure Qualification Records (PQR) within regulated manufacturing environments
  • Practical knowledge of welding coordination activities and compliance with ISO 3834, PED or equivalent quality standards
  • Acquired experience working within defence, aerospace, pressure vessel, oil and gas, or similarly highly regulated industries
  • Considerable technical understanding of TIG and PAW welding processes, with experience supporting highly detailed fabrication activities
  • Relevant engineering qualification in welding, manufacturing or mechanical engineering; experience with titanium or other high-specification materials highly desirable
