Job summary

Hitachi Rail in Newton Aycliffe is seeking a skilled Weld Technician (Welding & Fabrication) to join our manufacturing team. This hands-on role focuses on welding, fabrication and finishing of car bodies and sub-assemblies for world-class rail vehicles, with quality, safety and craftsmanship at the heart of every task.

You’ll work with high autonomy, perform MIG and TIG welding, inspect your work, and support continuous improvement and training across the team, contributing to safe, reliable

Qualifications

  • Proven experience in welding and fabrication, including coded MIG/TIG welding.
  • Valid MIG/TIG coded welding qualification.
  • Strong health and safety understanding in welding environments.
  • Ability to work independently and solve technical problems.
  • Great attention to detail and high-quality workmanship.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Teamwork experience and collaborative mindset.
  • Flexible, including shift work when required.
  • Positive, can-do attitude and willingness to train others.
  • Ability to learn new skills and support training.

Responsibilities

  • Carry out MIG and/or TIG welding activities per procedures.
  • Fabricate and assemble car body components and sub-assemblies to exacting standards.
  • Complete pre- and post-weld inspections and own weld quality.
  • Perform weld repairs, finishing and distortion control.
  • Apply calibration methods as required.
  • Move car body panels safely and prepare weld surfaces.
  • Document welds and production records accurately.
  • Investigate and resolve quality issues with Engineering/Quality teams.
  • Promote best practices and share technical knowledge.
  • Maintain health, safety, housekeeping and environmental compliance.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives (Kaizen/5S).
  • Deputise for the Section Leader when required.

Your New Role

We are looking for a skilled Weld Technician (Welding & Fabrication) to join our manufacturing team, playing a key role in the welding, fabrication and finishing of car bodies and sub-assemblies for our world-class rail vehicles. This is a hands‑on role where quality, safety and craftsmanship are at the heart of everything you do.

Working with a high degree of autonomy, you'll use your expertise to carry out welding activities, inspect your own work, solve problems and help ensure we deliver exceptional products to our customers. You'll also have opportunities to support and develop others, contributing to a culture of continuous improvement and technical excellence.

Some Key Responsibilities
  • Carry out MIG and/or TIG welding activities in line with approved welding procedures and specifications.
  • Fabricate and assemble car body components and sub-assemblies to exacting quality standards.
  • Complete pre- and post-weld inspections and take full ownership of weld quality.
  • Perform weld repairs, weld finishing and distortion control activities.
  • Use calibration and correction techniques, including cold and hot calibration methods where required.
  • Safely move car body panels and prepare weld surfaces for production activities.
  • Accurately complete weld documentation and production records.
  • Identify, investigate and resolve quality issues, working closely with Engineering and Quality teams.
  • Promote best practice, support training activities and share technical knowledge with colleagues.
  • Maintain high standards of health, safety, housekeeping and environmental compliance.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives, including Kaizen and 5S activities.
  • Deputise for the Section Leader when required.
About You

We're looking for someone who combines strong technical welding expertise with a proactive, team-focused approach.

Essential
  • Proven experience performing a range of welding and fabrication activities, including coded MIG or TIG welding.
  • Valid MIG or TIG coded welding qualification.
  • Strong understanding of health and safety requirements within a welding environment.
  • Ability to work independently, make informed decisions and solve technical problems.
  • Excellent attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality work.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience working successfully within a team environment.
  • Flexible approach to work, including shift working where required.
  • A positive, "can-do" attitude and willingness to support colleagues across wider functions.
  • Ability to learn new skills and support the training and development of others.
Desirable
  • Experience welding aluminium.
  • Lifting qualifications.
  • Train-the-Trainer qualification or previous experience delivering training.
