Job summary

Sodexo is seeking a Part-time Chef/Cook to join our Dalston, Carlisle catering team. You will prepare and serve high-quality meals, manage stock and costs, and deliver excellent customer service in a fast-paced environment.

You should have NVQ Level 2 Chef qualification or equivalent, experience in catering, strong knowledge of food hygiene and safety, and the ability to work well with the team. Flexible, with IT skills and willingness to learn new skills.

Qualifications

  • NVQ Level 2 Chef qualification or equivalent is required.
  • Experience as a Cook or Chef in a busy catering environment is essential.
  • Knowledge of food hygiene, safety and Health & Safety requirements is important.
  • Experience with stock control, ordering and managing food costs is expected.
  • Able to prepare and cook to high standards while maintaining quality and presentation.
  • Good organisational skills to plan workload and manage changing priorities.
  • Strong communication and customer service skills are needed.
  • Self-motivated with initiative to work independently when required.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and IT skills are beneficial.
  • Willingness to learn and complete required training is expected.
  • Experience training or mentoring team members is a plus.
  • IOSH Managing Safely qualification is advantageous but not essential.
  • Flexibility to support other catering areas as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare, cook and serve high-quality meals, with consistent presentation.
  • Oversee smooth service during shifts and meet agreed standards.
  • Provide friendly, professional service to create a positive customer experience.
  • Plan and organise food preparation and service to ensure timely delivery.
  • Order goods and manage stock levels, reducing waste where possible.
  • Manage stock rotation and control food costs.
  • Support achievement of food cost targets while maintaining quality.
  • Maintain clean, organised and safe kitchen and storage areas.
  • Follow all food hygiene, Health & Safety, and fire safety procedures.
  • Keep accurate food safety and compliance records for audits.
  • Ensure allergen and food safety requirements are followed throughout preparation.
  • Guide and support catering colleagues during shifts to maintain service quality.
  • Respond positively to customer feedback and look for service improvements.
  • Use company systems and Microsoft Office for records and administration.
  • Maintain high standards of personal hygiene and appearance.
  • Undertake training to develop skills; assist other team members as needed.

What you'll do:
  • Prepare, cook and serve high-quality meals, ensuring food is presented to a consistently high standard.
  • Take responsibility for the smooth running of the catering service during your shifts, ensuring agreed service standards are achieved.
  • Provide a friendly and professional service, helping to create a great experience for customers.
  • Plan and organise food preparation and service to ensure everything is ready on time.
  • Take responsibility for ordering goods and maintaining appropriate stock levels.
  • Manage stock effectively, including stock rotation, portion control and reducing food waste.
  • Support the achievement of food cost and margin targets while maintaining excellent quality.
  • Ensure the kitchen, food preparation and storage areas are clean, organised and secure.
  • Follow all food hygiene, Health & Safety, fire safety and safe working procedures.
  • Maintain accurate food safety and compliance records and support the achievement of required audit standards.
  • Ensure allergen and food safety requirements are followed throughout food preparation and service.
  • Support and guide catering colleagues during your shift, helping the team deliver a consistently high standard of service.
  • Respond positively to customer feedback and look for opportunities to improve the catering service.
  • Use company systems and Microsoft Office where required to complete records and administration.
  • Maintain high standards of personal hygiene and professional appearance.
  • Support other areas of the catering operation when required and undertake relevant training to continue developing your skills.
What you'll bring:
  • A 706/2, NVQ Level 2 Chef qualification or equivalent.
  • Previous experience working as a Cook or Chef within a busy catering environment.
  • Experience supporting or overseeing a catering service and working effectively with a team.
  • Good knowledge of food hygiene, food safety and Health & Safety requirements.
  • Experience with stock control, ordering and managing food costs.
  • The ability to prepare and cook food confidently while maintaining consistent standards of quality and presentation.
  • Good organisational skills with the ability to plan your workload and manage changing priorities.
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills.
  • A self-motivated approach with the confidence to work on your own initiative when required.
  • The ability to remain calm, organised and positive during busy service periods.
  • Good IT skills, including experience using Microsoft Office.
  • A willingness to learn, develop your skills and complete any required training.
  • Previous experience supporting or training other team members would be beneficial.
  • An IOSH Managing Safely qualification would be advantageous but isn't essential.
  • Flexibility to support other areas of the catering operation when required.
