Job description

Are you a Web Developer looking for a unique opportunity to make a national impact? If so, join our team! The post holder will play a key role in developing and maintaining the UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology’s (UKCEH) digital presence. They will be responsible for enhancing, upgrading, building, and provisioning Drupal websites and other web assets to a high standard, ensuring they are robust, efficient, and aligned with organisational objectives. In addition, the role offers opportunities to collaborate with the Information Security team to help manage and mitigate security risks and vulnerabilities across UKCEH’s digital infrastructure. Your main responsibilities will include:

Responsibilities
  • Develop, maintain and optimise Drupal themes using Twig, SASS, CSS and JavaScript
  • Build and maintain custom modules to extend Drupal functionality.
  • Work with core Drupal APIs and third‑party modules to integrate new features and functionality.
  • Stay current with Drupal core updates and wider ecosystem.
  • Manage code using Git and GitHub
  • Troubleshoot and resolve bugs and issues.
  • Set up content for the UKCEH websites in accordance with brand and accessibility guidelines.
  • Train end users and create training material.
  • Manage support tickets and communicate with end users in a timely manner.
  • Work collaboratively with Communications & Engagement and Business Development Teams to provide input and direction to information architecture, design, content templates and functional specifications.
  • Assist in the management of the web hosting provision for UKCEH’s Drupal websites – currently via Pantheon.
Required Qualifications
  • Experienced Drupal web developer (2+ years).
  • Experience managing web hosting provision for Drupal 10, including Views and other key modules, along with creating and maintaining custom modules and themes.
  • Knowledge of Drupal 10.
  • Knowledge of both front‑ and back‑end development.
  • Knowledge of developing accessible websites and applications.
  • A degree (2:1 or higher) in computer science or equivalent.
  • Understanding of the digital environment for research institutes.
  • Drush, Composer, PHP, JavaScript / jQuery, HTML, responsive CSS and Sass, Twig, Git.
  • Strong communication skills, including the ability to communicate technical concepts to non‑specialist audiences.
Desirable Skills
  • Drupal 11.
  • Linux command line scripting.
  • Using MS SharePoint and Teams.
  • Web analytics and reporting.
  • Pantheon toolset, including Terminus.
  • Cloudflare.
  • Knowledge of JavaScript front‑end frameworks.
  • Static Site Generators.
