Job summary

Royal Devon is seeking a Band 6 Ward Sister/Charge Nurse to provide clinical and managerial leadership on the Acute Medical Unit (AMU) in Exeter. The role covers cross‑disciplinary coordination, mentorship, and assurance of high standards of patient care.

You will work across acute medicine, with opportunities in Same Day Emergency Care and Medical Triage, under a fixed-term contract. Part-time and full-time arrangements exist for NHS staff, with a focus on quality and safety in patient care.

Role Summary

The overall job purpose of the Ward Sister/Charge Nurse is to provide clinical and managerial leadership to the nursing and multi-professional team on the Acute Medical Unit (AMU). This includes acting as a clinical leader and an expert practitioner liaising, guiding and advising the multidisciplinary team and external agencies in the provision of optimum patient care.

This will require the Ward Sister/Charge Nurse to regularly review the clinical records of patients under their sphere of responsibility, to evaluate the effectiveness of the standard of care planning and delivery, and to use the results to work with the team to improve patient outcomes. Within their leadership role they will be responsible for providing feedback on the evaluation of good and poor practice to team members ensuring effective role modelling and mentorship to the team.

They will also be expected to play a proactive role in quality and service improvement and working closely with the Clinical Nurse Manager and multi-disciplinary team, assist in the auditing of clinical standards of care within their clinical area. This includes ensuring a good working environment in which all patients receive a high standard of clinical care.

The Acute Medical Unit (AMU) are looking to recruit an experienced and motivated nurse to join our team as a Band 6 Sister/Charge Nurse. You will get the opportunity to work across our dynamic unit where you will experience all aspects of working in Acute Medicine including Same Day Emergency Care and Medical Triage. We currently have 1 substantive vacancy, with a potential fixed term contract pending approval. You will be required to have a minimum of 2 years of post-registration experience in acute medicine.

We currently have 1 part time fixed term vacancy, for current NHS employees this post could be a secondment opportunity.

Working Pattern:Days, nights, weekends and bank holidays.
