Responsibilities
  • Answer telephone enquiries in an appropriate manner reporting information to patients, nursing staff and other members of the multi-disciplinary team.
  • Maintain good written and verbal communication between all departments and outside agencies.
  • Use the computerized patient management system (Camis) to access patient details, admit and discharge patients.
  • Be responsible for the ordering of stock and to ensure adequate levels are maintained.
  • Photocopy documents/notes as required. Locate, collate, file and store patient's notes as appropriate
  • Contribute to developing a welcoming atmosphere within the ward making users feel comfortable and at ease.
  • Deal appropriately with distressed patients and/or relatives with support from nursing staff.
  • Report any problems relevant to the ward to the senior nurse in charge.
  • Ensure up to date personal awareness and knowledge of Trust wide issues and directives, applying knowledge in the workplace, including attending appropriate directorate briefings., Northampton General Hospital is one of the largest employers in the area and we are on an exciting journey.   • Normal routine clerical duties, e.g. filing, charting, making lists, completing forms.
  • Answering telephone, taking messages and enquiries regarding patients' condition after consultation with ward nursing staff.
  • Operate patient administration computer system and ensure computer system is up to date at all times with details of all patients currently on the ward.
  • Ensure all patient details on the computer are correct, including ethnic origin.
  • To ensure that all patient discharges and transfer details are recorded on the computer as soon as possible after the event.
  • To ensure that all patient admission, transfer and discharge details are recorded in a timely manner.
  • Maintain an adequate supply of stock levels to maintain the smooth running of the ward.
  • Be responsible for ensuring that case notes are available, maintain them in an orderly manner and return them appropriately after discharge letters are completed.
  • Notify Next of Kin of patients admissions and (emergency) transfers if required by ward staff.
  • Ensure that, once medical staff have completed discharge summaries and coding have taken their information, the notes are returned to medical records.
  • Make arrangement for X-rays, ECG and other relevant procedures, when requested.
  • Take request forms to X-ray, Pathology and carry out other similar errands.
  • Collect and deal with post appropriately. Any post for the Ward can be opened and dealt with (if in doubt, ask the nurse in charge). Any post marked with a staff members' name should be in the staff mail tray. Post for the Ward Manager should be handed to the ward manager.
  • Obtain relevant personal information for nursing documentation and update details on the computer.
  • Liaise with ward co-ordinator regarding all patients expected for admission.
  • Any other ad-hoc duties as required by the ward manager.

  • The post holder will be expected to supervise junior staff.
  • Be actively involved in the induction of new staff.
  • Accept personal responsibility for identifying their own learning needs and for maintaining their own professional development and mandatory training.
  • Assist in the facilitating of a learning environment conducive to the acquisition of further knowledge and skills and be actively involved in the development of others.
  • Promote and provide health education for patients and their carers/family.

  • Demonstrate a caring and supportive attitude towards their work colleagues.

  • The post-holder may be required to carry out other relevant duties as required.

Dryden ward is a 26 bedded acute cardiology ward. We are looking for a friendly dynamic team player who can cope well under the pressure of a busy environment.

We are looking for someone with excellent communication skills, who enjoys working with members of the public. You will be a key team player, using your clerical skills to support the ward.

The demands on this role are high and as such you will need to be able to manage your time well.

You need to be organised, willing to learn and able to use online computer systems. The role will include, but not limited to, answering the telephone, filing, medical data inputting, ordering stock items for the ward and assisting with general ward cleanliness.
