Job summary

  • Participate in assessments, including setting and evaluating written and oral assessments.
  • Undertake other duties as assigned by line manager and engage in university projects as directed.

Job description

The Role

The Aberystwyth School of Veterinary Sciences is seeking to appoint a highly motivated veterinary surgeon for one year to teach foundational subjects, largely anatomy and physiology, to first and second-year veterinary science students. The successful candidate will join the veterinary team in the School and will be involved in didactic teaching, practicals, tutoring and assessment. Previous teaching experience is highly desirable but not essential for the right candidate.

What you’ll do

This job description is subject to review and amendment in the light of the changing needs of the University, to provide appropriate development opportunities and/or the addition of any other reasonable duties.

  • To co-ordinate and teach first- and second-year BVSc students in veterinary physiology and anatomy. This includes arranging and implementing the timetable and providing relevant academic support to students. You will have access to the previous year’s lecture presentation and recordings.
  • To teach students in other courses, as agreed with the line manager.
  • To participate in assessment activities, including setting and evaluation of assessments, both written and oral.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Undertake other duties as assigned by your line manager, commensurate with the role's grade.
  • Engage in university-level projects and initiatives as directed, and undertake any additional duties commensurate with the role, as assigned by the line manager.
  • Demonstrate flexibility by supporting colleagues during periods of high demand, including attendance at key university events such as open days and graduation ceremonies which may include weekend work.

Who you are – Qualifications, Experience, Knowledge and Skills required

Essential

  1. Veterinary Science Qualification and registration with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons or more than three years’ experience in teaching anatomy and physiology to undergraduate students.
  2. Proven experience in working with undergraduate or post-graduate students in a teaching, supervisory or mentoring role.
  3. Demonstrable experience in working effectively within a team to achieve shared objectives
  4. A well-developed knowledge of standard IT packages and the ability to adapt to using a range of end-user systems.
  5. Well-developed oral and written communication skills.
  6. An ability to understand the bilingual nature of the University and an awareness of the procedures in place to support working bilingually.

Desirable

  1. Previous teaching experience, particularly in the subjects of anatomy and physiology
  2. A postgraduate qualification in veterinary science or associated subject
  3. Oral (spoken) and Written Welsh Level B1.*
