Job summary

Alstom UK — Derby is seeking a skilled Vehicle Paint Sprayer for night shifts to finish large rail vehicles to high quality standards. You will perform full surface preparation, priming, spraying, and final finishing in a safety-critical production environment.

Role requires experience in paint finishing or spray painting, the ability to read technical instructions, and a strong eye for detail. Night shifts run 18:00–06:00 with enhanced overtime rates and a 48-hour week.

Qualifications

• Previous experience in paint finishing or spray painting.
• Ability to prepare, prime, and finish large surface areas.
• Experience working from technical instructions and specifications.

• Ability and willingness to work permanent night shifts.

Responsibilities

• Carry out full surface preparation on rolling stock (sanding, keying, masking, filling).
• Apply primer and topcoat systems, including 2K paint systems.
• Spray large vehicle surfaces to a high-quality standard.
• Complete finishing work including polishing, defect removal, and snagging.
• Carry out touch-ups and rectification work on completed vehicles.
• Apply detailed livery designs accurately to specification.
• Work from technical drawings, written instructions, and job sheets.
• Maintain high standards of safety, cleanliness, and quality.
• Work effectively as part of a fast-paced production team.

Voyager Refurbishment project and the follow‑on CL222 Refurbishment project until September 2028

Role Purpose

This role involves delivering high‑quality paint finishing on large rail vehicles, including full surface preparation, priming, spraying, and final finishing. You will be working in a safety‑critical, physically demanding production environment where precision and finish quality are essential. Candidates from a range of engineering and vehicle finishing backgrounds will be considered.

Location & Working Pattern

• Hours: Minimum 48 hours per week
• Immediate starts available

Key Responsibilities

• Carry out full surface preparation on rolling stock (sanding, keying, masking, filling)
• Apply primer and topcoat systems, including 2K paint systems

• 00:00 - 03:15: £24.06 PAYE / £32.27 Umbrella
• 15:00 - 06:00: £27.14 PAYE / £36.45 Umbrella
• Paid Breaks
• £40 per day net subsistence allowance available to candidates who live 55+ miles from site

Required Skills & Experience

Essential

• Previous experience in paint finishing or spray painting
• Ability to prepare, prime, and finish large surface areas
• Experience working from technical instructions and specifications
• Strong attention to detail and quality control
• Ability to work in a physically demanding environment
• Ability and willingness to work permanent night shifts

Desirable

• Experience in rail, automotive, marine, aviation, HGV, or plant industries
• Water‑based paint system experience
• Knowledge of 2K systems and Hydro topcoats
• Ability to mix and match paint colours accurately
• Experience with pressure pot spray systems
• Experience working with aluminium components (awareness of sensitivity considerations)
