Job description

Job title: UX Researcher
Type: Full-time, Permanent
Location: UK-based, with flexible home, office, or hybrid working
Office locations: Newcastle and York, with hubs across the UK

As a user researcher at hedgehog lab, you’ll be joining a team that solves real user problems through discovery, insight and evidence, owning the research that shapes product direction and drives real outcomes for our clients.

You’ll be hands‑on, running mixed‑methods studies from generative discovery through evaluative testing, and translating findings into clear stories and persuasive recommendations for design, engineering, and product teams.

What you’ll be doing
  • Lead end-to-end user research for client projects, often mobile or web apps, greenfield work or major evolutions.
  • Run discovery research to surface real user needs and behaviours, and evaluative research to de-risk designs and validate value.
  • Design and execute qualitative and quantitative studies: interviews, usability tests (moderated and unmoderated), surveys, workshops, ethnography and analytics investigations.
  • Synthesise evidence into actionable artefacts (personas, journey maps, insight briefs, test reports and prioritised recommendations) that influence product decisions.
  • Present findings and lead stakeholder workshops to align sponsors and teams on user‑centred outcomes.
  • Champion ethical, inclusive and accessible research practices, ensuring GDPR compliance and rigorous participant care.
  • Share learnings, mentor peers and help evolve our research practice to increase impact across engagements.
How you’ll work
  • Be embedded in multi‑disciplinary squads with Product, Design and Engineering, owning the research strand from discovery through launch.
  • Operate with autonomy, scoping pragmatic studies that fit time and budget while maximising insight.
  • Collaborate closely with designers and product managers to turn evidence into experiments, prototypes and measurable success metrics.
  • Work flexibly from home, office or hybrid hubs, with occasional travel to client sites.
  • Be supported by a coaching‑led manager who values trust, clarity and continuous growth.

What we’re looking for
  • Minimum 3 years’ research experience (UX research or closely related fields).
  • Demonstrable experience designing, running and analysing qualitative and quantitative research across product lifecycles.
  • Strong judgement in method selection and pragmatic study design that balances rigour with constraints.
  • Proven ability to synthesise evidence into clear, persuasive insights and practical recommendations.
  • Excellent stakeholder management and presentation skills (confident in client‑facing settings).
  • A solid understanding of UX, accessibility principles and ethical/GDPR‑compliant research practice.
Nice to have
  • Experience working in Agile product teams or embedded client engagements.
  • Familiarity with analytics, survey tooling, unmoderated testing platforms or mixed‑methods approaches.
  • Consultancy or enterprise/regulatory product experience.
