Job description

Overview

Working in AtkinsRéalis, this position offers the opportunity to join our growing Utility Consultants team. As part of the Utility Solutions capability, you will support a broad client base with multi‑utility consultancy services, helping them effectively plan and execute construction projects across a range of sectors and project types.

Responsibilities
  • Interpret client utility requirements and understand scheme drawings.
  • Present client schemes to utilities, procure costs and designs, and review utility designs against client designs to identify risks and savings.
  • Calculate anticipated load requirements for various building types and evaluate utility assets on record drawings.
  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously, ensuring timely responses from utilities and meeting project milestones.
  • Write detailed, accurate reports and attend client design meetings and coordination sessions on site.
  • Advise on procurement strategies for new utility connections, diversionary works and disconnections.
  • Coordinate utility works on behalf of clients to align with client programmes.
  • Assess utility plans, conduct feasibility studies, identify risk areas and potential costs.
  • Perform technical coordination between the client and utility companies.
  • Provide guidance to clients on minimizing utility‑related project risks.
  • Manage the utility aspects of projects with a range of values and requirements.
  • Attend design and progress meetings with utility companies and clients, and liaise to obtain easement and wayleave information.
  • Undertake NRSWA 1991 C1–C9 processes.
  • Work independently on internal and external projects, leading complex utility projects and mentoring junior consultants.
  • Engage with clients via email and telephone and support team communication when required.
  • Act as Technical Checker or Reviewer for departmental deliverables.
  • Assist the Managing Consultant with UCS inbox management and fee proposal writing.
About You
Essential Criteria
  • Solid understanding and experience in the utility industry, preferably in a B2B service environment.
  • Experience with loading calculations, network reinforcement and design, and with assessing utility constraints on schemes.
  • Proven client‑facing consultancy skills and ability to maintain communication with multiple stakeholders.
  • Thorough knowledge of the UK utility market, regulatory framework and competitive connection environment.
  • Knowledge of procurement processes for utility works and experience in a procurement or management role.
  • Background in the engineering industry with understanding of renewable technologies for developer connections.
  • Familiarity with relevant legislation, including NRSWA 1991, HAUC, HSG47, HSE GS6, Streetworks UK and PAS128.
  • Strong project management skills, accurate report writing and the ability to work with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Computer literate in Microsoft applications, full driving licence and accurate, detail‑oriented work ethic.
  • Problem‑solving mindset, adaptable to changing workloads, and clear, comprehensive communication style at all levels.
  • Team player capable of independent work, highly motivated with a positive personality.
Desirable Criteria
  • Knowledge of AutoCAD and GIS or other drawing software.
  • CSCS (EUSR) card holder at site operative or regular site visitor level.
  • Degree holder or pursuing a relevant professional qualification in engineering, project management or a related field.
