About the role
The diagnostic team works within the outpatient service and delivers diagnostic services in the bladder cancer and prostate cancer pathways. The main focus of this Trainee Advanced Nurse/Clinical Practitioner role will be to work closely with other nurse practitioners in the diagnostic team, the uro‑oncology nursing team, and members of the wider multidisciplinary team across the cancer pathways, linking with benign services. You will perform advanced skilled interventions and use your clinical expertise to interpret findings, request further diagnostics, and refer to other practitioners or GP. This will be done within the structured academic and clinical training of an Advanced Practice Master's Degree (MSc Level 7).
Key responsibilities
- Requesting radiology diagnostic and staging scans
- Flexible cystoscopy – bladder cancer checks; 2 week wait suspected bladder cancer diagnostic cystoscopy; stent removal
- Transurethral Laser Ablation for recurrent bladder cancer
- Prostate biopsy – including Direct Access clinics for suspected prostate cancer; transrectal and transperineal prostate biopsy; MRI result telephone clinics; prostate cancer active surveillance clinics
- Develop and provide comprehensive clinical care, specialist advice, and support to patients in Urology Diagnostic service; develop experience as an advanced, autonomous practitioner alongside the multidisciplinary team in Urology service.
- Practice in compliance with code of professional conduct, being responsible and accountable for decisions, actions, or omissions at this level of advanced practice
- Work towards a critical understanding of broadened responsibility and autonomy, recognising limits of competence and scope of practice
- Develop professional judgment skills: identify when to escalates or seek guidance, critically reflect on practice, self‑awareness, emotional intelligence, and willingness to challenge thought processes
- Work in partnership with patients, families and carers, using assessment methods (history‑taking, physical, holistic, mental health, diagnostic tests, health needs assessments)
- Develop effective communication skills: support people in decisions, care planning, health changes, promote person‑centred approaches; communicate complex or contentious information with respect, compassion and empathy
- Develop proficiency in decision‑making and clinical reasoning; prepare interventions including prescribing (after NMP approval) and therapeutic advice within scope and guidelines (RPS, NMC, HCPC, GPhC, GOC)
- Manage risk with clinical supervision, especially complex events, ensuring safety and wellbeing of individuals, families and carers
- Act as a clinical role model and advocate for responsive care, informed by local service and population needs, external agencies, and wider networks
- Compile professional portfolio for Advanced Clinical Practice, aligned with service frameworks or credentials (NHSE or other professional bodies)
- Develop a range of independent advanced clinical procedures, request and interpret diagnostic investigations as required by service and scope of practice
Leadership and Management
- Initiate and develop effective relationships, fostering clarity of the advanced practitioner role within teams
- Model OUH values: person‑centred approach, improving service delivery
- Negotiate individual scope of practice within legal, ethical, professional and organisational policies, managing risk and ensuring quality care
- Evaluate own practice, participate in MDT and team evaluations, recognising impact of advanced practice on service function, effectiveness and quality
- Engage in peer review and implement strategy for improvement, supported by peers and clinical supervisors
- Seek feedback from patients, families, carers and colleagues to guide development and service improvements
- Demonstrate team leadership and resilience as an advanced practitioner, managing unfamiliar, complex, or unpredictable situations, building confidence in self and others
- Provide managerial support for well‑being, absence, appraisals, and performance management as required
- Participate in clinical governance reviews, incident investigation, and adapt systems and processes accordingly
Education and Professional Development
- Critically assess and address own learning needs in line with a personal development plan across the four pillars of advanced clinical practice
- Engage in Higher Education Institution academic Level 7 AP MSc postgraduate studies, meeting requirements for MSc qualification
- Reflect to maximise clinical skill and knowledge development, evidenced in a professional portfolio
- Participate in performance reviews, appraisal processes, and the OUH clinical supervision and review meetings
- Advocate for and contribute to a culture of departmental, service, and organisational learning, inspiring staff
- Act as an educator where within scope, developing teaching skills with supervision or support
Research
- Develop and support a knowledge‑rich enquiry culture, fostering research values
- Engage in research activities, upholding good practice guidelines, developing evidence‑based strategies
- Evaluate and audit own clinical practice using valid methods, acting on findings with support
- Implement local governance systems and documentation processes, reviewing for improvement
- Critically appraise and synthesise research outcomes to underpin practice and inform others
- Identify gaps in knowledge, explore solutions, and coordinate further research if needed
- Link clinical practice to rigorous research, evidence in a professional portfolio
- Contribute to service or organisational research, including recruitment, investigation, or funding bids
- Complete Level 7 MSc research element on a topic relevant to practice; present findings to Service/Organisation to drive learning and change
- Facilitate collaborative links between practice and research through engagement and networking
- Disseminate best‑practice findings and quality improvement projects
Qualifications
- Registered Healthcare Professional
- First level degree in undergraduate base profession
- Supervision, mentoring or facilitating workplace learning qualification
- Consolidated experience in urology or transferable skills and knowledge
- Knowledge of key issues in urology diagnostic services
- Experience of clinical governance practices – audit / service evaluation
- Demonstrable evidence of ability to study at Level 7
- Commitment to a full Master's Level 7 Advanced Practice postgraduate degree
- Ability to recognise and analyse complex situations using decision‑making skills to take appropriate action
Desirable criteria
- Experience in urology or diagnostic services
- Leadership or management qualification
- Existing technical skills such as flexible cystoscopy or prostate biopsy
- Ability to undertake clinical audits or service evaluation
- Completed MSc modules relevant to urology; you must have appropriate UK professional registration
