Job description

University of Nottingham Boat Club – Assistant Coach (Development Squad)

UoNBC is seeking an assistant rowing coach to support the Development Squad.

The club is now looking to develop its coaching team to support the Development Squad for the 2026-27 season. We are seeking a coach to support day to day coaching of the Development Squad on water and the ergo through Terms 1 and 2. Term 1 focused mostly on technical standard and power on the ergo, basic technique on the water and learning to train. Term 2 progresses the application of these skills to develop racing crew boats. By term 3 squad members are expected to have integrated fully into the senior squad and train and compete alongside them.

The role should look to support developing a technical and physical foundation for athletes to integrate successfully into a competitive senior programme.

The University of Nottingham boathouse is situated on the banks of the River Trent and provides a centre for training on a wide 9km stretch, and facilities to use ergos as a squad. Our programme is located within easy reach of the National Water Sports Centre, and a close partnership allows our students extensive access to the 2km buoyed course and a year-round base at the facility. Student athletes can also take advantage of the state-of-the-art training facilities at the £40 million David Ross Sports Village, including a 200-station fitness suite, High Performance Zone and Sports Injury Clinic. Members join a long history of success on the water at BUCS and other national competitions; our alumni include Olympians Chris Bartley , Vicky Meyer-Laker , David Lemon, and Blue Boat rower George McKirdy, and numerous Henley Royal Regatta winners.

  • A self-motivated, driven approach, eager to contribute to the success of the programme and foster a positive training environment for all members.
  • A sound technical knowledge of the rowing stroke and the ability to coach this in a clear and understandable manner to novice athletes.
  • An understanding of how to coach crews for all types of racing.
  • The ability to inspire, organise, and lead athletes with a range of previous training experience.
  • Hold a coaching qualification or be willing to obtain one with support from the club.
  • A proven track record of developing athletes
  • RYA Powerboat level 2 (or equivalent)
