The role:

The Team Underwriting Manager is a first-line leadership role, sitting between Underwriter and Underwriting Manager, with support from a Senior Underwriter. You will support the day-to-day performance of the Underwriting Team while continuing to apply sound lending judgement. Acting as a first point of escalation, you will coach and develop Underwriters, support quality and audit activities, and help embed new controls, processes, and technology. This role is ideal for an experienced Underwriter or lending professional looking to take their first formal step into leadership.

Key responsibilities

  • Act as the first escalation point for complex or sensitive applications.
  • Coach and develop Underwriters through side-by-side support, case reviews, and constructive feedback.
  • Support onboarding, development plans, and targeted training to address knowledge gaps.
  • Monitor productivity, service levels, decision quality, affordability assessments, and customer outcomes.
  • Use management information and performance data to identify trends, risks, and opportunities for improvement.
  • Support audits and quality assurance activity, ensuring findings are addressed through coaching, training, and process improvements.
  • Promote adherence to lending policy, operational controls, and FCA Consumer Duty principles.
  • Help implement new controls, policies, systems, tools, and automation initiatives.
  • Work closely with Quality Assurance, Training, Compliance, Product, and Technology teams.
  • Support the achievement of individual and team performance targets, taking proactive action to address performance gaps.
  • Recognise and celebrate high performance while managing underperformance through coaching, development plans, and formal performance processes where appropriate.
  • Deputise to the Underwriting Manager when required.
What we're looking for
  • Experience within underwriting, lending operations, or a regulated financial services environment.
  • A strong track record of accurate, fair, and consistent decision making.
  • Experience supporting colleagues through coaching, mentoring, or informal leadership responsibilities.
  • Good understanding of affordability, risk management, responsible lending, and customer outcomes.
  • Strong communication, organisational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to remain calm under pressure and manage competing priorities effectively.
  • Comfortable using operational systems, performance data, and emerging technologies.
  • Sound judgement in knowing when to resolve issues independently and when to escape.
  • Proven ability to set, monitor, and achieve individual and team targets while identifying and addressing underperformance in a timely, fair, and supportive manner.
  • Previous experience as a Senior Underwriter, Team Coach, or Subject Matter Expert.
  • Audit, Quality Assurance, or Compliance experience.
  • Experience supporting vulnerable customers.
  • Experience with process improvement initiatives, automation, or Salesforce.
  • Ability to multitask and adapt to changing business priorities.
