Job summary

Sompo International is seeking an Underwriter for the P&C Middle Market team based in our London office. You will evaluate submissions, price coverage, and set terms in line with underwriting strategy, while developing relationships with brokers and clients to grow the portfolio.

The ideal candidate has 5+ years in P&C underwriting, strong negotiation and communication skills, and a solid grasp of MS Office. Join a collaborative, risk-aware culture with ongoing professional development.

Qualifications

• At least 5 years of P&C underwriting experience.
• Underwriting experience in Property and Liability within the middle market.
• Established relationships with retail producers.
• Strong negotiation skills.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
• Excellent communication (written and verbal) skills.

Responsibilities

• Prioritize and evaluate new and renewal submissions to identify profitable opportunities.
• Price and analyze coverage, structure and exposures on individual risks.
• Set terms and conditions per underwriting strategy and guidelines for quoting risks.
• Attend client/broker meetings and social events as applicable.
• Exercise underwriting pricing discipline to meet profitability goals.
• Expand existing portfolio by developing relationships with current and prospective clients.
• Conduct underwriting audits and refer risks outside authority for higher-level approval as needed.

What you’ll be doing:

• Prioritization and evaluation of new and renewal submissions to identify those accounts that provide the greatest opportunity for profit consistent with the business plan and corporate profit objectives.
• Price and analyze coverage, structure and exposures on individual risks.
• Set appropriate terms and conditions per the Company underwriting strategy and guidelines to quote qualified risks.
• Attend client/broker meetings, lunches, dinners and other social outings as applicable.
• Exercise proper underwriting pricing and discipline to meet profitability goals, complying with underwriting guidelines, systems and procedures.
• Expand existing portfolio of business by developing existing relationships and new prospective clients.
• Support our focus on building strong customer relationships balanced with a strong risk mitigating and compliance-driven culture. Emphasis on proactive monitoring, governance, risk identification and escalation, as well as making sound risk decisions commensurate with the business unit’s risk appetite. Conducts individual account underwriting audits as needed.
• Complete underwriting referral applications for risks outside of your authority for higher level approval as necessary.

What you’ll bring:

• Underwriting experience in Property and Liability within the middle market space. Experience in other lines of business would be viewed as positive but is not a pre-requisite.
• Undergraduate, Insurance or advanced degree preferred.
• At least 5 years of P&C underwriting experience.
• Significant experience within the middle market space.
• Established relationships with retail producers.
• Strong negotiation skills.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word and PowerPoint).
• Excellent communication (both written and verbal) skills.
