About Outer Nest Ltd

Outer Nest is committed to helping clients grow through digital transformation. We tackle a broad spectrum of projects—from early‑stage startups to scaling enterprises—always placing the user at the heart of the solution. Join us in supporting UK businesses to thrive.

The Role

We are looking for a skilled and enthusiastic UI/UX Designer to become a core member of our Design agency team. In this crucial position you will craft intuitive, inclusive, and engaging digital products and services for our clients. Working in an agile setting, you’ll partner closely with researchers, product owners, developers, and fellow designers to turn complex user requirements into sleek, effective solutions. You will uphold user‑centred design practices throughout the product journey, from initial concept and research through to delivery and refinement. Your designs will directly shape how citizens interact with government services, making them more efficient and pleasant to use.

Key Responsibilities
  • User Research & Analysis: Lead and take part in research activities (interviews, usability testing, surveys, workshops) to uncover user behaviours, needs, and motivations; synthesize insights to steer design choices.
  • User Flows & Wireframing: Produce user flows, information architecture diagrams, and low‑fidelity wireframes that map out product structure and functionality.
  • Prototyping: Build interactive prototypes at various fidelity levels to test and validate concepts with users and stakeholders.
  • UI Design & Visual Language: Create high‑fidelity interfaces that maintain visual consistency, align with brand guidelines, and deliver an attractive look; develop and maintain design systems and style guides.
  • Collaboration: Work seamlessly with cross‑functional teams—including product owners, engineers, and content designers—to deliver integrated, feasible solutions; present and defend design decisions to stakeholders.
  • Iteration & Optimisation: Refine designs continuously based on user feedback, analytics, and technical constraints.
  • Advocacy: Promote user‑centred design principles and best practices across the organisation.
  • Documentation: Keep clear, concise design records such as user stories, specifications, and rationales.
Essential Skills & Experience
  • Proven track record as a UI/UX Designer with a robust portfolio covering websites, apps, and services.
  • Demonstrated experience across the full UX lifecycle—from research and ideation to prototyping and testing.
  • Proficiency with industry‑standard tools (Figma, Sketch, AdobeXD, InVision, etc.).
  • Strong grasp of user‑centred design, information architecture, and interaction patterns.
  • In‑depth knowledge of web accessibility standards (WCAG2.1AA) and experience designing for varied user groups.
  • Experience operating within an Agile/Scrum environment.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and people skills; able to explain design rationale to both technical and non‑technical audiences.
  • Ability to gather requirements, conduct research, and translate insights into practical designs.
  • Experience creating and maintaining design systems.
Desirable Skills & Experience
  • Background working for government or public‑sector projects.
  • Basic front‑end development knowledge (HTML, CSS, JavaScript) to understand implementation limits.
  • Experience with quantitative research and data analysis.
  • Degree in HCI, Graphic Design, Product Design, or equivalent hands‑on experience.
