Job summary

East and North Hertfordshire Teaching NHS Trust is seeking an Urgent & Emergency Care Clerical Assistant to support the Emergency Department and Urgent Treatment Centre across Lister Hospital in Stevenage and Welwyn. The role is full time, 37.5 hours per week, offering weekend and Bank Holiday enhancements.

You will work independently and within a multi-disciplinary team, handling reception duties, data entry, and clerical support, across sites and handling enquiries with confidentiality.

Qualifications

  • GCSE Level or equivalent.
  • Basic numeracy and literacy.
  • Customer / patient care experience.
  • Reception/admin background, NHS experience preferred.
  • NVQ3 or equivalent experience.
  • Organisational skills and ability to prioritise workload.
  • Ability to work under pressure.

Responsibilities

  • Process enquiries politely and efficiently at reception or by phone.
  • Deal with enquiries from Police and external agencies about missing people with confidentiality.
  • Carry out administrative duties accurately and efficiently.
  • Provide customer-oriented reception service and clerical support to the clinical team, updating databases.
  • Alert clinical staff if a patient looks distraught or unwell and activate alarms.
  • Maintain confidentiality and follow legal requirements for patient documentation.

Job overview

We are recruiting for Urgent & Emergency Care Clerical Assistant who shareour vision to be trusted to provide consistently outstanding care and exemplary service to our patients.

You will be work independently and as part of a multi-disciplinary team, whose aim is to provide a polite, friendly and patient-focused service to patients attending our Emergency Department and supporting the Urgent Treatment Centre. You will be required to across across site, Lister Hospital in Stevenage and our Urgent Treatment Centre's at Lister and in Welwyn.

This role forms part of a fixed rota providing cover including weekends and 365 days a year. You will need to be able to workdays, evenings, weekends and Bank Holidays, including Christmas and New Year. You will be compensated in enhancements to your pay due to the hours required for this role.

Main duties of the job

You will be required to process all enquiries politely and efficiently, displaying empathy when answering queries at the reception desk or over the telephone.

You will be required to deal with enquiries from Police and other external agencies concerning missing people by searching for details on hospital database, whilst always maintaining confidentiality.

You will ensure that all administrative duties are carried out in a professional, accurate and efficient manner always.

You will be responsible for providing a customer orientated reception service and clerical support to the clinical team in the Emergency Department. This is to include accurately registering and updating details onto the hospital and national databases and assisting in any enquiries from internal or external agencies.

You are responsible for alerting clinical staff if you notice a patient looking distraught or unwell needing urgent medical attention, and to activate the emergency alarm where necessary.

You must also recognise the legality of patient documentation and always maintain patient confidentiality.
