If so, we have a fabulous opportunity to join our dynamic team as a Family and Community Learning Tutor. The Opportunity Adult Community Learning Community and Family Learning (ACL) is ECC's provider of lifelong learning experiences for Essex residents. This is more than just a teaching job—it’s a chance to change lives. You will deliver a diverse range of engaging courses designed to support parents and carers across Essex, from parenting and SEND support to early years development, English and maths, and other tailored subjects. The role will involve primarily working with parents, with some sessions including children. Courses are delivered online and in person at schools and community venues, requiring adaptability, warmth and approachability. Flexible hours are offered, including occasional evenings and school holiday sessions. You will also play a key part in building relationships with local schools and community organisations to reach those in need.
Accountabilities and Responsibilities
- Produce appropriate schemes of work and lesson plans.
- Promote the effective use of individual learning plans.
- Teach classes, provide tutorials and other supervised learning, and produce resources.
- Promote and use technology to improve outcomes for students.
- Support the development of maths and English.
- Review individual progress and revise course planning accordingly.
- Meet minimum standards for retention and success.
- Provide effective negotiated learning experiences that enable students to meet their goals within an inclusive environment.
- Challenge thinking, foster debate and develop the ability of learners to engage in critical discourse and rational thinking.
- Develop relationships with community organisations and schools.
- Provide general advice and information with reference to pre‑course information, initial assessment, student induction, progression opportunities, employability options, assessment and examination procedures.
- Review and evaluate lessons and courses.
- Maintain and effectively use Individual Learning Plans with students to facilitate the evaluation of progress and understanding of what is required to improve.
- Offer information, support and guidance regarding progression routes within and outside the organisation.
- Attend meetings as required (curriculum, pre‑course, supervision, etc.).
- Conduct learner assessments in line with funding requirements and learner capabilities.
- Assess, monitor and record learners’ progress using individual and group learning plans and record achievement.
- Undertake mandatory continuing professional development, including regular graded and ungraded observations of learning, teaching and assessment. Participate actively in any individual improvement plan and achievement of performance targets.
- Ensure accurate and up‑to‑date record‑keeping, including registers, Individual Learning Plan records and other key information related to retention, achievement and completion, monitor and manage absence, and facilitate ongoing and end‑of‑course evaluation.
- Actively support curriculum development and research.
- Promote course promotion.
- Participate in the self‑assessment process.
- Resolve complaints.
- Actively promote the Prevent agenda, ECC & British values, equality and fairness in all work areas and activities.
- Comply with ACL quality standards, health and safety procedures, safeguarding requirements, data protection and informational governance (GDPR).
- Apply internal quality assurance methodologies to ensure teaching, learning and assessment procedures follow awarding organisation requirements.
- Ensure assessors are familiar with and can carry out the specific assessment and follow recording and internal audit procedures.
- Implement robust assessment standardisation processes and identify consistent outcomes against agreed standards, including ensuring an effective procedure for complaints and appeals is in place.
- Make recommendations to improve standards of vocational tutors, monitoring the quality of their performance, effective working relationships with learners, assessment reviews and quality of feedback, and improving internal quality assurance arrangements.
- Act as End Point Assessors for the Essex Provider Network.
- Document specific individual and shared targets and objectives defined annually within the performance management framework.
Qualifications and Experience
- Educated to RQF level 3 (GCSE A‑C) in Maths and English; willingness to achieve the same if not already qualified.
- Relevant teaching qualification; if not already held, must be achieved within the first two years.
- Commitment to continuing personal development, and professional and subject specialist updating.
- Evidence of subject expertise appropriate to the level of course to be taught.
- Experience of teaching and learning in the adult sector.
- Wider subject knowledge to support student progression.
- Knowledge of technology in the context of supporting learning, competent in using technology to facilitate learning and data reporting.
- Ability to build strong and collaborative working relationships inside and outside the learning environment.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
Part‑time annualised hours: 3 hours per year with a pro‑rata salary of £47.32 per annum and additional shifts paid accordingly. The position includes working during term time.
