Job Description

Are you ready to be part of a team of talented engineers and shape the future of Tunnelling & Underground Structures? The AECOM Tunnelling team is looking for an individual to lead our growing Tunnelling and Underground Structures Team. This role combines leadership and people management with the technical engineering challenges of a fast-paced sector and market and client engagement. The team has approximately 15 - 20 engineers and a pipeline of exciting and challenging design projects in the UK and abroad.

You will work closely with our London-based team and input into the strategy and direction of the UK tunnelling business, reporting to the UK Director of Tunnelling. In addition to the office leadership role, you will be involved in delivering a range of projects from a technical perspective. We are looking for someone who is passionate about design and delivery as well as mentoring and developing colleagues and junior members of the team. A good communicator who can network well within different technical teams at AECOM and externally with clients and industry bodies.

Responsibilities
  • Safety culture and performance: Ensure safety is the primary concern of all team members in the office or on-site. Carry out risk assessments for all work and implement safety control measures. Encourage reporting of incidents and near misses and report regular safety observations to enable learning and improvement.
  • Stakeholder relationships: Coordinate and contribute to local work winning and business development activities. Develop and maintain relationships with public sector and contractor clients and stakeholders. Lead the production of proposals for new commissions and review commercial proposals matched to resourcing schedules.
  • Quality control: Ensure accuracy of data and forecasting provided to the Regional Lead for Tunnelling. Report on leading and lagging indicators of safety, financial performance, work pipeline and other issues affecting delivery.
  • Leadership: Define and influence the workplace culture. Set the tone for communication and collaboration within the team, raise morale and job satisfaction, and increase productivity and efficiency in a positive and supportive environment.
  • Collaboration: Establish a clear ethos and values for the team, foster collaboration and communications, and create an inclusive work environment. Set clear goals and rewards for the team. Maintain relationships with clients and industry bodies to position AECOM to tender and lead in the industry.
Qualifications
  • Degree in Civil or Geotechnical Engineering (or equivalent) with postgraduate leadership experience in a Tunnelling team.
  • Chartered Engineer (EI, ICE, IStructE or equivalent).
  • Excellent communication (written and spoken) and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience in rock and soft ground and tunneling works for transportation, energy and utility schemes.
  • Experience on large, multi-disciplinary projects with ability to engage across disciplines and interfaces; capable of taking project roles such as Technical Lead, Design Manager or Project Manager and leading bids.
