Trusts & Estates Tax Director/Partner About The Role

This position sits at the senior end of private client tax, with a particular focus on trusts, estates and inheritance tax planning. You will work with clients and their professional advisers on complex, often sensitive matters, providing clear advice where technical accuracy and sound judgement are essential.

Beyond managing a specialist portfolio, you will help determine how the wider team delivers trusts and estates services. This includes supporting colleagues across several offices, developing relationships with referral sources and identifying opportunities to expand the firm's presence in this area. Key responsibilities

  • Take the lead on complex trusts and estates engagements, providing practical advice on tax planning, inheritance tax and related private client matters.
  • Manage senior relationships with high-value clients, families and professional advisers, handling sensitive discussions with discretion and confidence.
  • Develop the firm's specialist offering, identifying areas for growth and helping shape the services available to clients.
  • Advise on intricate trust and estate matters, balancing technical requirements with clients' wider circumstances and long-term objectives.
  • Oversee trust accounts, trust tax returns and inheritance tax reporting, maintaining high standards of accuracy, compliance and risk management.
  • Provide technical guidance to colleagues across the firm's offices, acting as a senior point of reference on complex cases.
  • Build relationships with solicitors, wealth managers and other professional contacts to strengthen referral networks and generate new work.
  • Contribute to business development, including client proposals, meetings and initiatives designed to raise the firm's profile in the trusts and estates market.
  • Support the development of colleagues through technical guidance, mentoring and knowledge sharing.
  • Monitor relevant legal, tax and regulatory developments and ensure the team's advice and working practices remain up to date.
  • Work with senior colleagues to identify improvements to service delivery, client management and the development of the wider private client offering.
The successful Trusts & Estates Tax Director/Partner will have:
  • STEP and/or CTA qualification, supported by substantial post-qualification experience in trusts and estates taxation.
  • Extensive technical knowledge covering trust taxation, inheritance tax, estate planning and associated private client matters.
  • Experience advising on complex, high-value cases where discretion, sound judgement and clear communication are essential.
  • A track record of managing important client relationships and developing a specialist portfolio.
  • The credibility to advise senior clients and build effective relationships with professional referrers.
  • Experience leading, mentoring or influencing colleagues, ideally across teams or multiple offices.
  • Commercial awareness and the ability to identify opportunities to develop services and generate new business.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain complex tax matters clearly.
  • A thorough approach to technical quality, compliance, risk management and professional standards.
