Job summary

A regional healthcare provider is seeking junior physicians to join Watford General Hospital. The role offers opportunities to rotate through various Medicine sub-specialties, providing valuable experience in managing medical patients. Job description

This is an exciting opportunity for skilled and competent junior physicians to join Watford General Hospital. The successful candidates will be offered the opportunity to rotate through the various Medicine sub-specialties this is fixed term post until 4th August 2026. The various sub-specialty placements will offer the post-holders the opportunity to work within the sub-specialty team and gain quality experience in the management of medical patients in an acute setting. This post has an on-call element of 1A banding. The post holder will work under supervision of a consultant Physician. During the period of the contract and across the various posts, the doctors are expected to become competent at organising the day-to-day duties of this clinical area. The post-holder will be encouraged to attend junior doctor teaching and training and be given access to appropriate study-leave and associated funding to enhance their experience and grow their clinical competency.

Main duties of the job
  • Daily review of medical patients in their allocated sub-specialty.
  • Care of the inpatients i.e. performing relevant investigations, following up results, monitoring of patients, liaising with other specialities, communication with patients and families, completing discharge summaries etc.
  • Responsible for ensuring adequate clinical notes are made in accordance with good medical practice.
  • To work closely with appropriate nursing, professional, technical, and administrative and support staff.
  • Actively participate in weekly teaching and departmental audits.
  • Junior doctors are required to perform duties over and above their contracted hours in occasional emergencies and in unforeseen circumstances, at the request of the Clinical Director of the service.

Job responsibilities

  • Seeing new medical referrals on take with the on-call team and post-taking patients with on call consultant.
  • Acute care of medically unwell referrals and inpatient.
  • Outpatient clinics as appropriate for speciality. Clinics for ST1/2 are done with close consultant supervision as a learning experience.
  • Actively participate in weekly teaching and departmental audits.
Person Specification
Education and qualifications

Essential

  • Eligible for GMC registration to cover the scope of employment.
  • Satisfactory completion of FH02 post (or equivalent certificated evidence of competence at the time of taking up post).

Desirable

  • Distinctions, Scholarships, prizes Other degrees e.g. BSc. Masters, PhD (or equivalent).
  • ALS (Advanced Life Support).
Knowledge

Essential

  • Keeps professional knowledge and skills up to date.
  • Potential to benefit from the training available i.e. fits with career aspirations.

Desirable

  • Demonstrates a critical and enquiring approach to knowledge acquisition.
Experience

Essential

  • Competent in basic procedures e.g. CPR, infection control, physical examination history taking etc.
  • Able to prioritise clinical need.
  • Understands current clinical issues in specialty.
  • Aware of own limitations, consults senior colleagues appropriately and knows when to ask for help and understands importance of teamwork. Understands the principles of patient confidentiality and data protection.
  • Understands the need for and appreciates the role of audit in clinical practice.
  • Understands the principles of clinical governance - ensures patients are not put at risk.

Desirable

  • Knowledge or UK health systems and practices including the relationship between primary and secondary care and interprofessional relationships.
  • Knowledge of current issues in the NHS.
  • Understands the importance and impact of information systems in health care.
  • Has participated in clinical audit.
