Job description
Role Overview

We are advertising for a Trust Registrar in Emergency Medicine based at the Basingstoke & North Hampshire Hospital site for Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

We offer a friendly, supportive department, with a recently re‑configured rota, designed to generate the best possible work‑life balance and ensure that training and personal development needs are met. We were recently awarded the Royal College of Emergency Medicine "Learning Environment of the Year" award for the training and learning experiences we offer. Post holders will be supported in maintaining their professional and personal development and will have a Named Clinical Supervisor. You will be entitled to all the benefits of a training contract including study leave, annual leave, sickness leave and pension contributions. Clinical time will be spent working on the shop floor where we provide 24‑hour senior or consultant level supervision. There will be opportunities to attend weekly departmental teaching as well as access to relevant trust‑wide training days. In addition, we provide 24 hours every week of Consultant Clinical Educator time. This is dedicated shop floor time with a Consultant who provides shop floor training and assessments, enabling doctors to maintain evidence of training even when outside of a formally recognised training scheme.

Clinical Responsibilities
  • Assume a direct clinical role within the Emergency Department, taking responsibility for the initial assessment and management of patients.
  • Provide supervision and advice to junior medical staff and Emergency Nurse Practitioners within the department. This includes discussing cases, reviewing patients and instigating appropriate management.
  • Set time within the rota for attendance at teaching, governance & departmental meetings as well as non‑clinical time.
  • Work under 24‑hour senior or consultant level supervision and attend weekly departmental teaching.
Leadership & Development
  • Lead the clinical team when consultants are not present.
  • Maintain certification in ALS, ATLS and APLS, or recognised equivalents to these courses.
  • Attend relevant trust‑wide training days and benefit from Consultant Clinical Educator time.
Contract & Benefits

The post will be on a fixed‑term contract on our Basingstoke site. Post holders will receive the same benefits as our current Higher Specialist Trainees, including study leave, annual leave, sickness leave, pension contributions and Named Clinical Supervisor support.

About the Trust

Our vision is to provide outstanding care for every patient. Patient care is at the heart of what we do at our three sites: Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital, Royal Hampshire County Hospital in Winchester and Andover War Memorial Hospital. Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust provides medical and surgical services to a population of approximately 600,000 people across Hampshire and parts of West Berkshire.

Our cultural ambition is to have a culture that places people at the heart of all we do, where we all belong, and where learning, improvement and excellence thrive.

We provide specialist services to people across the UK and internationally. We are one of only two centres in the UK treating pseudomyxoma peritonei (a rare form of abdominal cancer) and we are leaders in the field of tertiary liver cancer and colorectal cancer.

The trust employs more than 9,000 staff and has a turnover of over £500 million a year. As a Foundation Trust, we are directly accountable to our members through the governors. The Council of Governors represent the interests of their constituencies and influence the future plans of the Foundation Trust.
