Job description
Trust Doctor (eqv in ST4+) in Neonatal Transport

The London Neonatal Transfer Service (NTS) is offering 6-12-month fellowships starting September 2025, with the option to extend by mutual agreement. The posts suit senior middle-grade or post-CCT doctors who seek focused training in neonatal transport together with leadership, quality-improvement and operational experience before consultant appointment.

Why choose London NTS?

  • In 2023-24 we processed 2,340 requests and completed 1,903 transfers, including 950 emergencies, making NTS consistently the UK's highest-volume neonatal transfer service.
  • Road-based with air capability, covering emergency uplift, palliative and elective repatriation across 26 London units, with occasional PICU transfers.
  • A dedicated NTS Consultant Neonatologist is always available for clinical and operational advice.
  • Fellows typically lead 80-100 emergency transfers in six months, each formally debriefed and logged for reflection.

Please be advised that the vacancy advertisement may close early if a sufficient number of applications are received therefore, we recommend that you submit your application as soon as possible to avoid disappointment

Main duties of the job

The London Neonatal Transfer Service (NTS) is co-located with the medico-surgical neonatal unit at the Royal London Hospital. NTS provides high-level specialist care to neonates transferred between the 26 units in Greater London and beyond. Transfers into or out of paediatric intensive care units are occasionally required.

The service is road-based but air-capable, providing emergency uplift, palliative care and elective repatriation transfers, as well as occasional round-trip transfers for specialist assessments.

In 2023-24, NTS processed 2340 transfer requests and completed 1903 transfers, including 950 emergency transfers.

The service has been responsible for the highest volume of neonatal transfers for several years compared to other UK neonatal transfer services. There is a dedicated 24/7 NTS consultant available for clinical and operational support.
