Job summary

MSC Cruises is seeking a Travelling Fleet Medical Auditor to oversee onboard medical operations through audits, inspections, and governance across the fleet. The role includes reviewing clinical documentation, equipment inventories, and infection control, while collaborating with shipboard teams to implement improvements.

Ideal candidates will be Registered Nurses or Paramedics with leadership and shipboard experience, capable of independent work across locations and travel extensively.

Qualifications

• Registered Nurse or Paramedic with unrestricted registration.
• Minimum of 5 years post-registration clinical experience.
• Minimum of 2 years in a clinical leadership, governance, quality, or supervisory role.
• Previous shipboard medical experience.
• Demonstrated experience conducting clinical audits, quality reviews, inspections, or risk assessments.

Responsibilities

• Conduct scheduled and ad hoc audits of onboard medical centres to ensure compliance with MSC policies, SOPs, regulatory requirements, and industry best practices.
• Evaluate the quality and safety of clinical services delivered onboard, identifying opportunities for improvement and mitigating potential risks.
• Review medical documentation, patient care records, medication management practices, and infection prevention and control processes to ensure compliance with established standards.
• Assess medical team performance, clinical competence, and operational effectiveness, providing recommendations for corrective actions where necessary.
• Verify compliance with vessel medical equipment inventories, pharmaceutical management processes, and clinical governance requirements.
• Investigate identified deficiencies, non-conformities, incidents, and trends, supporting the development and implementation of corrective and preventive action plans.
• Produce detailed audit reports highlighting findings, risk assessments, areas of excellence, and opportunities for improvement.
• Collaborate with shipboard medical teams, Lead Physicians, Clinical Governance personnel, and shoreside Medical Operations to implement audit recommendations and monitor progress.
• Monitor key clinical quality indicators including patient safety events, medication errors, infection control measures, patient satisfaction metrics, and healthcare outcomes.
• Support preparation for external inspections, accreditation reviews, regulatory audits, and other quality assurance activities.
• Participate in the development, review, and revision of medical policies, SOPs, and governance frameworks based on audit findings and emerging best practices.
• Escalate significant patient safety concerns, compliance issues, or clinical governance risks to the Director of Medical Operations and relevant stakeholders.
• Support root cause analyses and investigations following adverse events and significant medical incidents.
• Maintain accurate audit records, databases, and performance dashboards to support continuous quality improvement initiatives.
• Work closely with Medical Operations, Clinical Governance, Health Information Management, Medical Facilities, and other departments to ensure alignment of quality and compliance objectives.
• Represent MSCCM Medical Department in a professional and responsible manner at all times.
• Ensure compliance with GDPR, HIPAA, and all applicable privacy and confidentiality regulations.
• Travel extensively throughout the fleet to perform audits, inspections, investigations, and quality assurance activities.
• Participate in emergency response activities and provide operational support during significant medical events when requested by the Director of Medical Operations.

Your Essentials

• Strong understanding of clinical governance principles, patient safety, quality improvement methodologies, and healthcare compliance standards.

• Strong communication and stakeholder management abilities.
• Ability to work independently across multiple geographical locations.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint, and Teams.
• Experience with Electronic Health Record systems and healthcare data analysis.

Desirable

• Qualification in Clinical Governance, Quality Management, Healthcare Leadership, or Patient Safety.
• Auditor qualification (ISO 9001, healthcare quality auditing, or equivalent).
• Experience supporting accreditation or regulatory inspection processes.
• Current Advanced Life Support (ALS) Provider or Instructor certification.
• Knowledge of maritime medicine and international maritime healthcare regulations.
• Experience with healthcare performance metrics and quality dashboards.

Travel Requirements

• Extensive international travel is required.
• Must be able to obtain and maintain all necessary visas and travel documentation.
• Must be able to embark and disembark vessels globally and travel at short notice as operational needs dictate.
